The proposed improvements include conversion of the intersection from partially stop-controlled
into a roundabout in order to mitigate the approaching traffic difficulties in crossing the
intersection especially with North Quincy Street higher speed traffic flow. In a roundabout, all
entering traffic must yield to traffic already in the circulatory roadway. As such, northbound and
southbound traffic on North Quincy Street will also yield to circulating traffic, regulating its
flow.
New sidewalks are proposed along North Quincy Street east side and Chestnut Street north side
within the project limits and on both sides of Boundary Avenue (up to Randolph Avenue). The
town of Abington will continue the Chestnut Street north side sidewalk up to the driveway at
Chestnut Glen, following construction of this project.
A “splitter” island is proposed at each approach to the roundabout, dividing the (inbound and
outbound) traffic, which will reduce speed and provide pedestrian refuge (so that crossing
pedestrians only have to cross one lane/direction of traffic at a time). There are crosswalks on all
approaches, set one car length back from the intersection to allow the pedestrian to cross behind
a vehicle waiting to enter the circulating traffic stream.
Bicycle accommodation will be provided through the provision of on-street bicycle lanes on
North Quincy Street and Chestnut Street, and “sharrow” pavement markings and/or “share the
road” signage on Boundary Avenue. As is typical with roundabouts, bicycles will be encouraged
to avoid the circulatory roadway by leaving the street via provided bike ramps and traveling
around the roundabout on the shared-use path.
Advance warning signage, new pavement markings and additional lighting will be provided
along the approaches and the circulatory roadway.
