Description
The turn lane indicator arrows painted on N. Lexington St. (on the north side of Lee Highway) are very confusing. There are two lanes at the intersection with Lee - the left lane has an indicator arrow showing that it is for cars that want to go straight OR turn left. The right lane is indicated as a right turn only. Nowhere else have I seen arrows painted in such a way - it is always the opposite (right lane is straight or right turn), left lane is left turn only). This is just common sense and would also help to move cars crossing Lee on N. Lexington in a much more efficient manner. Currently, cars driving north on Lexington waiting to turn left on Lee are overly cautious since they don't know if cars in the oncoming direction will go left (thus allowing them time to also turn left onto Lee) or if they're going straight. Please repaint the arrows in a common sense manner.

Thank you for your inquiry and suggestion. Unfortunately, changing the allowed movements as suggested would result in an increased number of collisions. Because the intersection is offset, the western southbound lane of N Lexington St on the north side of Lee Hwy (currently the Right Turn Only lane) does not line up with the southbound lane on the south side of Lee Hwy. If vehicles were allowed to proceed straight across from the western southbound lane, they would push the southbound left turners into oncoming northbound traffic or possibly have to enter the pedestrian crosswalk to get around a waiting left turning vehicle. (Looking at an aerial satellite image helps to show this.)
This configuration is also often used at locations where right turns are allowed on red. This allows right turning vehicles the ability to clear the intersection throughout the signal cycle, while both left turners and through traffic have to wait until their signal changes to green to proceed. Designating a right turn lane decreases the overall delay at the intersection. The current lane designations at N Lexington St and Lee Hwy will not be changed, as doing so would decrease safety at this intersection.
