Water continues to accumulate here, as it has for years. I can't figure out where it goes, but maybe the street is being undermined at this point. Possible sinkhole?

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Alameda is a very flat island, and you may have noticed that there is minor ponding all over. This kind of ponding happens when there is a rainstorm, when someone irrigates their lawn too much, or when someone's sump pump produces water. It generally evaporates within 3 sunny days. If it is a concern, you can sweep it down the street, in order to help it dry faster, and to discourage mosquito usage.

The City shares responsibility with the adjacent homeowners for repair of concrete along the street. The City repairs curb, gutter, driveways and sidewalks only under these conditions:
1. If a City-maintained street tree has damaged the concrete, causing a tripping hazard on the sidewalk, the City will repair the damage. For this type of repair, we make a temporary fix immediately, by grinding the concrete or adding an asphalt patch. Then a more permanent repair request is added to the list. It sometimes takes several years before the permanent repair is made. The permanent repair includes pruning the tree roots and replacing the damaged concrete.
2. If there is a significant problem with flow in the gutter, causing water to back up into the travel lane, then the curb and gutter will be re-set during the next planned pavement resurfacing.

All other repairs to curb, sidewalk, and driveway concrete is the responsibility of the homeowner. It appears that this issue on Sterling is not caused by a street tree. Sterling is in better than average condition, so it is not scheduled for resurfacing in the near future. The cracked curb is not a pedestrian tripping hazard, so you are not required to fix it at this time. But if you want to fix it, you will need to get a permit, and have a licensed contractor do the repairs. The permit office number is 510-747-6800.
