Thank you for reaching out to us. This is an issue that we’ve spent a lot of time and careful consideration on over the past 4 years. The pedestrian volume at this intersection has been consistently low and decreasing for the past few years. Traffic Engineering installed a new pedestrian crossing light with voice commands for student and pedestrian use. HPD notified Challenger Elementary and Challenger Middle school and asked that the PTA president be notified along with sending out a school cast to notify parents of the removal of the Safety Patrol Aide. After we received your service request, the Traffic Engineering department along with HPD met to reevaluate the safety of this intersection. Safety is our number one priority, and we wanted to double and triple check the environmental factors surrounding this intersection. After their re observation, they told us the pedestrian volume is still very low and while it does not warrant the return of a Safety Patrol Aide at this location, it has been decided to place signs indicating that vehicles must yield to pedestrians.
