The sidewalks on union street are horrible. It is a state route... the sidewalks and curbs are in very bad condition from West main st. To near the old friendly.
There is a school along that stretch that our children walk daily and a bus stop for another scool. Our team The Rockville Volunteer Services has picked up a lot of broken glass on that stretch of sidewalks. I would absolutely hate to see one of our children running (which a parent sometimes cannot prevent) on these sidewalks, trip up on one of the thousands of damaged parts falling right onto the glass that someone so disrespectfully has broken glass on. This is a not so far fetched scenario. I cannot tell you the number of times my 7 year old took diggers on the sidewalks that aren't damaged much less the ones that are.
Plus up the street going towards the hospital, they did patch some areas recently but those patched areas are crumbling themselves so it really is as if they never did them.
Ok now I got this....the State DOT emailed me back the state owns the sidewalks it's the town who would repair it.
Another thing that helps to get the safety issue across...I ride CT Transit bus all the time. There are at least three wheelchairs that get off this stretch of road and another a friend of mine that lives next door, wheelchair bound, travelling this sidewalk. The condition of the sidewalks force them off the walk in places and they are travelling in the road on the side....placing them in further danger when cars pass other cars on the right. Thank you for listening. Marie
