This was investigated in 2009 when there was a campaign by local residents wanting a traffic signal installed. At the time we met with the City of Rochester Hills and the two adjacent property owners on the east side of Adams Road (Church and School). We told them the location would meet warrants for a signal if the two properties would combine their access to one location across from Butler Road. Additionally, other significant roadway geometric changes must be made to this intersection before a signal can be installed. We have been working with the City of Rochester Hills on a project for improvements and signal installation. However, no funding source has been identified at this time. It will also requires "buy-in" from the two property owners and some funding on their part. No timetable has been established at this time due to lack of funds.

Can the lights at Avon/Adams and Hamlin/Adams be timed to allow for gaps in traffic giving residents and traffic from Butler more opportunities to turn onto Adams north or south? It seems that when the light changes at Avon and creates a gap going south the traffic coming north will not allow for people to turn left and vice versa when there is gap in traffic coming north the traffic coming south has already taken away any opportunity to turn.
Unfortunately, I think someone needs to be either killed or seriously injured before anything is done at this intersection. It has taken me some mornings 15 minutes to make a right onto Adams from Butler. My children have counted over 200 cars passing before we could turn. It is an extremely dangerous situation with multiple cars turning onto Adams heading southbound, while other cars are trying to turn left into the businesses (Brookfield and Somerset). While all these turns are attempted, cars are passing at high rates of speed, swerving around cars. This is a serious safety issue and all the road commission can whine about is money. I am also concerned about the incline of northbound Adams at Butler, as the limited sight distance approaching the incline is extremely dangerous, especially when someone is turning and then being passed at high speed. I was passed attempting this maneuver by a full-sized semi! Please consider another evaluation, as things have changed in the last three years.
KC, although I agree changing the timing of the lights might help, it seems that once the light turns red on Avon, those turning left onto Adams from Avon keep the flow quite solid, basically non-stop! Seriously, the traffic is outrageous and continuous. Heading northbound on Adams from Hamlin at evening rush hour is extremely congested too. This is a serious public safety issue, which up until this point, seems to be completely ignored by the city.
Due to temporary closure of Crooks Road north of Hamlin Road and the closure of Livernois Road south of Avon Road, more traffic is using Adams Road Road. This is a temporary condition and inconvenience which will end soon. A traffic signal will not be installed at this time.
As noted above, this was investigated in 2009. At the time RCOC met with the City of Rochester Hills and the two adjacent property owners on the east side of Adams Road (Church and School). We told them the location would meet warrants for a signal if the two properties would combine their access to one location across from Butler Road. Other significant roadway goemetric changes must be made to this intersection before a signal can be installed. RCOC has been working with the City of Rochester Hills on a project for improvements and signal installation, however, no funding source has been identified at this time. Anyway to adjust the timing of the lights for certain times of the day or would that still not alleviate the bulk of the problem? I have to imagine that the school has to be receiving similar complaints about the ability to enter and exit their facility. Was the issue as significant prior to the other construction projects mentioned by the RC agent?
I have a better suggestion. Close off Butler at Adams. Traffic lights, etc... won't help unless the raod is made into 5 lanes. BTW when Butler was a dirt road hardly anyone used it.
If you can't add a light, can you at least add a right turn lane on Butler so those turning right don't have to wait 5 or more minutes for a vehicle turning left to get a break in traffic to proceed?
And just what the city was waiting for - a serious accident that happened around 3:00 pm. at Adams and Butler. Someone was pulling out of the Montessori school and hopefully they didn't have a child in the car with them. You take your life in your hands when you have to pull out on this road. I called about it 3 years ago! Maybe this accident will propel them forward to making changes on this dangerous road.
Incredible: here is another picture: https://twitter.com/Sepetowskiii/status/307588498809032704/photo/1. Someone who knows how to do deal with the city needs to show this whole thread to whoever makes these decisions - a lawyer, a judge, or something. I have no idea how these things work. Someone should also print screen / copy/paste all this before the shameless road commission considers removing this page (ESPECIALLY if there was a more multiple fatalities from this horrific accident).
I wrote in about this very issue in September. Every morning, afternoon, and evening, I cringe watching cars attempt a left from Butler onto Adams. I have seen many near misses. For the Road Commission to claim it is a money issue is a slap in the face of concerned residents. The Road Commission, the Montessori school, and the other business should be mandated and forced to pay for the road improvements. It is part of doing business and more importantly, public safety is at stake. If I was one of those utilizing those businesses, I would immediately stop. Perhaps they will wake up with all of their profits going and realize these road improvements must be done. After seeing those accident pictures posted, I pray no one was fatally injured. I'm so sorry for those involved.
