Description
This is pretty much THE pedestrian gateway between the CBD and Bushnell Park. Like other heavily walked intersections in the city, this one needs an "ALL WALK" in the rotation. Instead you get stuck on a median!
I tried emailing Raj Mathur in the Engineering Department regarding this matter directly, but got no response so re opening.
Hartford 311 also asked...
Q. If possible please provide address or an intersection.

Here is video to help illustrate the issue.
Acknowledged Hartford's 311
Thank you for contacting Hartford's 311. We have created case #69953 and reported the matter to our Transportation/Traffic issues Department.

I agree, this situation could be improved by changing the timing of the lights and the crosswalk signals so they are on an "all walk" schedule, similar to the intersections on Main Street.

This intersection is very frustrating for pedestrians. The curve around the park makes traffic hard to see and jaywalking especially dangerous, but jaywalking is almost required with the way the walk lights are set up. Since being pregnant and not wanting to dash across the street, I wait out the walk light and find myself waiting, often on the median, forEVER. I'm sure with a stroller that will be loads of fun, wondering whether it'll be my back that gets grazed by a passing car or my kid. Considering that this is a major thoroughfare for tourists and other visitors to downtown, it should be definitely be addressed!

why won't this be addressed? It is impossible to cross without being stranded on the median.

Yet another argument is that from at least two of the pedestrian vantage points, you can't even see the traffic signals, so you don't know if vehicular traffic has red or green lights.

I'd love to see speed bumps installed on the roads around the park. There is no reason for it to be the raceway that it is. The ALL WALK is a start, but as I've experienced elsewhere in town, many motorists don't heed that. Instead, they take the upcoming clear intersection as an opportunity to fly through without stopping. The West End has speed bumps.

Case closed.

Once again, "Congratulations" reads the email. "Issue has been resolved and closed."
So Frustrating. Not, "sorry, not in the budget", or "we think things are fine and dandy as they are", just "Case closed."
Dare I say most CBD intersections-depending on time of day/day of week-have an all walk in the cycle that happens automatically? Even intersections without medians, e.g. Main and Capitol, where one isn't forced-perhaps with a stroller or leashed dog-to be stranded with buses and traffic roaring by on both sides have them.
As I mentioned I emailed Raj Mathur directly. Is he the person in the engineering department who helped prompt this response, "According to the Engineering Department - the mid block signal has an exclusive ped phase with sufficient time to cross the street. Have a Great day!"?
Again, there are intersections with much less pedestrian traffic that have an all walk phase. Not only that, but a standard right angle intersection is much more easier to navigate, because you can at least see who has the green light, at this one you often don't even know which oncoming traffic has the green!
The problem is only made more obvious because there are SO MANY ped friendly intersections in the CBD now...including many (most?) with not only all walks, but the timer countdowns as well. What makes this one different?

...and to add a touch of levity...see click fix thinks I would be interested in this problem first reported in 2010 about noisy birds...it's still "open"

Have you ever tried to make it from the Train Station parking lot across Farmington Ave to Art Space? It's insane.

Please try to get a legitimate response to this issue. I'm was the pregnant commenter above, my baby will be 4 months old this month. I walk from Capitol & Main often and prefer to go through the park rather than past all the buses on Main St. But this intersection is a real hassle. There's not even a walk button on the northeast corner by Vitos. Watching visitors to the city navigate it makes me want to apologize room them on behalf of the city.

Can't possibly be too difficult to fix something like this in the 21st century.

I think this intersection is fine the way it is.

When in the @#$% is somebody going to address this? How about when we MAKE EVERYONE AT CITY HALL MAKE THIS CROSSING DURING RUSH HOUR! After a few have @#$% their pants in fear, then maybe somebody will address this issue!

I believe this intersection is included in the major design changes happening under the federal Tiger Grant. It may be the City closed it, not because it was done but because it was assigned to a solution ; the capital improvements.

Hi David. I hope so. Earlier this year they closed w/out explanation, and when asked for one the quote was, "According to the Engineering Department - the mid block signal has an exclusive ped phase with sufficient time to cross the street. Have a Great day!"
