Description
When people turn right from North Point Parkway to Kimbrell Bridge they ignore the gore (solid white lines) and immediately switch lanes. This blocks the left lane so that in many cases cars on Kimbrell Bridge cannot cross the North Point Parkway when the light turns green. The same occurs for cars trying to turn left from the North Point Parkway to Kimbrell Bridge, often times the lane is blocked and they cannot complete their turn. I propose extending the existing white posts further down Kimbrell Bridge to prevent cars from switching lanes. Also posting Stay in Lane signs would help prevent cars from crossing the solid white lines. If cars stay in their lanes the lanes will merge naturally and traffic will flow much more smoothly.

This is a great call out. I have to drive thru this intersection daily and this issue is certainly causing traffic to slow. If people would simply merge further down as they are supposed to, things would move much more quickly.
Another issue that needs to be addressed is drivers completely skipping that turn lane on Northpoint altogether and just turning right onto Kimball Bridge from the right hand lane (that is meant only for traffic crossing over Kimball Bridge and continuing north on Northpoint). This adds to the problem as well, and I would imagine is a moving violation that could be ticketed by Police.
Thanks.

The City believes that this issue is primarily one of enforcement and has advised our Department of Public Safety of the problem.
Our experience with other intersections around Alpharetta has proven that additional signage or traffic control devices have little, if any, impact on discouraging the behavior described. In fact, previous efforts at managing this specific intersection using traffic control devices extending further down Kimball Bridge Road had no appreciable impact and were ultimately removed due to motorists simply driving over them. That being said, we continue to explore options that balance traffic management, safety, cost, and aesthetic design.

Here are more intersections where extending the posts works. I know Kimball Bridge/ North Point Parkway is some weird vortex where the posts don't work, but I thought I would post this anyway:
Buice Road and Old Alabama
Old Alabama and Medlock Bridge
Five Forks Trickum and Ronald Reagan Parkway
