Description
Car traffic on east-bound (counter clockwise) Lake Merritt Blvd often takes the wrong lane ahead of the intersections with E 12th St and International Blvd, and cuts across the buffered, green bike lane once the driver realizes their mistake (both for people who want to turn but stay in the straight through lanes, and vice versa). This is so common that I see it almost every time I bike through here. Much better signage is needed ahead of these junctions so that drivers can pick and merge into the appropriate lane ahead of time, and the little sign to the right at Kaiser Center entrance isn't cutting it. Instead, I recommend paint in each of the lanes with the destination written, as well as directional signs hanging over each lane with the destination as well. A physical barrier in the bike lane (like recycled rubber "armadillo" wheel stops) would also help people from crossing over illegally here. Drivers also routinely cut off bicyclists when turning right onto the 1st Ave Pl intersection, which should be either turned into a dead end or at least have he turn radius increased to slow traffic at the corner.
