Description

Very badly worn bike lane pavement surface for 20 to 30 ft. length. Damaged surface is uneven, depressed, rough and gouged enough to create a high risk for loss of control, fall and serious injury or death by westbound bicyclists encountering this patch. This longstanding very rough surface problem area has been caused by years of heavy truck traffic traveling southbound on N. Prudence Rd. then turning right/westbound onto E. Speedway Blvd. This badly damaged bike lane surface poses extreme risks for bicyclists safety. Westbound bicyclists on E. Speedway Blvd. approaching this hazardous area 100+ meters east of this intersection easily arrive at speeds of up to 20 to 25 mph due to long down grade (descent) of westbound E. Speedway Blvd. 100+ meters prior to/east of danger area. The damaged bike lane surface is difficult to discern visually in time for bicyclists to adequately react or attempt evasion. Therefore the option or possibility for bicyclists to brake to adequately slow or stop in time to avoid rolling over this treacherous section and losing control is pretty much ZERO. Only last second avoidance choice/reflex available is to suddenly veer left into motor vehicle traffic lane with the good chance of a predictably bad conflict outcome with passing motor vehicles on this high-volume, high-speed roadway. Bicycle wheels contacting this damaged surface at any speed without "warning" is dangerous. Much more so at higher speeds of 20 to 25 mph. Please repair this area ASAP before a cyclist becomes a statistic there.
