It is very difficult to turn left off Alexander Rd. to US 1 West. Currently there is a stop sign there (no stoplight), and it is fairly difficult to see to your right to see oncoming traffic across Gervais Street Bridge. My proposal is for the road to switch with the adjacent dirt parking lot (used for overflow Riverwalk parking) so that traffic can flow through the US1/Sunset Blvd intersection. Traffic should flow much smoother and runners/walkers won't have to dodge traffic on Alexander to get to the Riverwalk.

This has been a horrible intersection for decades! It's worse since the Three Rivers Greenway (been under water in spots for months from rain) is so popular, added apartment homes around Granby Crossing all along Alexander Road (Carpenter Street), added new homes (Congaree Park) on the Greenway, and really not enough parking for those of us who love that area.
If a traffic light was placed there, you'd have to deal with the next too close traffic light trying to get out of Alexander Road with cars not able to go straight from the bridge with the light at State Street backing them up there also. The road at Alexander is not wide enough with houses so close to the road and has curves including a blind curve near the bowling alley at the other end of Alexandra where Blossom Street Bridge is 1 block away to the left with Knox Abbot Drive to the right. It has a light.
Another answer has to be found. It wouldn't help removing houses at Alexandra or trying to get around the curve at the other end of that street. The parking lot across from the entrance should be made into a garage with 3 - 4 stories for all parking.
Already there are 3 lots perhaps people not realizing the 3rd and not advertised under the Jarvis Klapman Bridge (pass Gervais Street Bridge) by Columbia Farms (not marked properly on this map; it's IN the park) poultry factory on Sunset Blvd. going in the direction of Lexington. Parking's on Sunset Blvd. on the right passing under the Jarvis Klapman Bridge or the first right coming from Columbia exiting onto Sunset Blvd.. It's paved very nice with a paved trail going down to the river area where picnic tables are located. Many go to that area to sit on the huge rocks or after they rent the kayaks and tubes from the Alexander Road main entrance or being their own.
I'd never go into the 3 rivers WITH OUT ANY type of swimmers vest due to too many drownings.....even good swimmers....caught in underwater boulders and tree limbs not seen. Thank God Columbia opened pools and centers for free lessons for 2 years and hopefully still do.
I gave up trying to go left from Alexander Road a long time ago before there was a park and was just 2 restaurants there without the new brick homes and apartment home complexes and student housing rental home apartments.
If anyone is going to the park and going to that area only to rent their river rental equipment, it's best to walk down from the Sunset Blvd. parking lot. The same is true if there are concerts or walks for certain causes to go to the better easy to get out or into parking lot.
I'd avoid that end of Alexandra trying to turn left on Rte. #1. Look at a map to see other alternatives. There are several. Lexington County wouldn't find it necessary to place a traffic light knowing no one has to use Alexander Road having several alternative roads with traffic lights. Knox Abbot Drive is your best bet when leaving Alexander Road.
