Description

We are writing to bring to your attention a pressing issue regarding the traffic flow and safety on Malden Center Main Street, specifically in the vicinity of New York Pizza and Dunkin. This area has been experiencing significant problems with traffic light synchronization, pedestrian safety, and traffic congestion, which require immediate attention as the new school year is approaching, and the safety of students and commuters is paramount.

Traffic Light Synchronization: The traffic lights along Malden Center Main Street do not appear to be in sync. It is quite common to observe a situation where one intersection's light is green while the light at the following intersection remains red. This lack of synchronization causes traffic backups and frustration for drivers, as well as a heightened risk of accidents.

Pedestrian Safety: With the impending start of the school year, a large number of students frequently traverse the area between New York Pizza and Dunkin, often failing to use designated crosswalks. This creates a hazardous situation for pedestrians, as well as drivers who may not anticipate pedestrians darting across the road. It is essential to address this issue promptly to ensure the safety of students and all residents.

Traffic Congestion: Due to the configuration of the road, there is only one lane for traffic in each direction. However, many drivers attempt to create two lanes, leading to further traffic congestion and a higher potential for accidents. The traffic in this area does not flow efficiently, leading to delays and frustration for commuters.

Given the imminent return of students to the nearby high school, it is crucial that these issues are addressed as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the students and the overall flow of traffic in the area.

I kindly request that the City Department of Transportation conduct a thorough evaluation of traffic light synchronization on Malden Center Main Street, explore solutions to improve pedestrian safety, and consider measures to alleviate traffic congestion in this critical area. Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated, as it will undoubtedly contribute to the safety and well-being of our community.
