Description
We and a number of our neighbors on Garfield avenue have noticed a dramatic increase in high-speed vehicles passing between High Street and Fernside Blvd on Garfield Avenue during commute times or late at night when both streets are busy. Today a silver late model Toyota sedan with red interior was speeding at upwards of 60mph+. Is there anything City of Alameda can do to make this street safe to ride bikes or get in and out of cars parked on the street?

Acknowledged Transportation Planning (Verified Official)
Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. Garfield is proposed to be a traffic-calmed Neighborhood Greenway in the draft Active Transportation Plan, with prioritization to be implemented by 2030. This would be a traffic-calmed pedestrian- and bicycle-priority street (still open to autos), and would include crossing improvements at key intersections. More information here: www.activealameda.org.
Please consider providing your input on the draft Active Transportation Plan by this Sunday, October 23, by using the survey, email, or phone number listed at www.ActiveAlameda.org.
Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
