Description
Can you please adjust the traffic signals so that the light at Upland Rd and Mass Ave turns red 5 or 6 seconds before the light Somerville Ave and Mass Ave. They currently turn red at the same time, this causes the section between the 2 lights in front of the T station to be blocked up. This situation causes the traffic to back up on Upland Rd because only 3 or 4 cars are able to clear the intersection at a time. This causes cars to block the intersection, crosswalks and doesn't allow the traffic on Mass Ave to turn left onto Upland Rd on the green arrow. Also could you look into making that green arrow come at the end of the green light, right now even if the intersection isn't blocked on the green arrow only 2 cars are able to get thru..or maybe keep it longer than 3 seconds.

I'm trying to figure out how the proposed change would affect traffic turning left from Upland and then trying to turn right onto Somerville Ave, at least if the overall signal cycle is not made longer, which would cause its own set of problems. Otherwise, wouldn't making the availability of a green light facing Upland even shorter simply back more traffic up on Upland (especially if, as proposed, the right turn lane from Upland were eliminated to allow for parking spaces off Mass Ave when those on.Mass Ave are removed)?
I certainly don't think the current timing is optimal but have to wonder whether other options would just make things a bit better for some drivers / paths through the intersection and worse for others.
