There is trash all over the front of the Veterans Memorial building, even around the plaque and stone up front. There are a few illegally planted tents as well. The grass and landscaping maintained by the city have been damaged as a result of the hoarding of trash. It appears that one of the tents caught fire and burned up half of a tree it was under. This is not only an eyesore but a completely unacceptable way to let people drift into misery — people who should be housed in shelters and supported by social services. The City of Oakland built up basic but large shelter capacity recently. It’s now time for the City to crack down on illegal dumping, hoarding, and camping so that these people in need head to newly built shelter capacity and get help.
