Grand Ave And Webster St Oakland, CA - Waverly

Grand Ave in downtown Oakland needs a left turn pocket for traffic turning off eastbound Grand Ave onto northbound Webster St.

This is the intersection of two city bike routes, but it is very difficult and dangerous for cyclists to hang out in the middle of the through lane waiting to turn left as auto traffic comes up behind them in this often shady area. The other side of Grand has a left turn pocket for traffic turning left onto southbound Webster, but not this side for some reason.

  All I'm doing is reporting a left turn from one city bikeway onto another that is dangerous and difficult to navigate by bicycle and suggesting a possible fix. Anyone who thinks it is a bad idea is welcome to just not vote on the issue, and if the city of Oakland determines that my suggestion is not feasible then I'm sure they will tell me. I have a lot of respect for Oakland PW and have seen them find creative ways to engineer a street in the past to work for all users, after other agencies had already given up and reported that it wasn't possible.

  Last night I was informed by the city's bike planner that the repave/restripe project going on right now will include bike sharrows from 25th down to 22nd St, to be completed within just a couple weeks. This doesn't solve the left turn issue I reported, but it does give cyclists another route to take, potentially avoiding that turn entirely.

2401-2599 Webster St Oakland, CA - Waverly

The bike route and bike lane signs on southbound Webster St at 25th St (far-side of the intersection) are bent and twisted. It looks like they got hit by a tall truck. The attached photo shows the signs BEFORE they got hit.
