Community Board 11 encompasses four major neighborhoods: Bensonhurst, Mapleton, Bath Beach, and Gravesend. The north, south, east, west limits of 61st Street, Gravesend Bay, 26th Avenue, Avenue U, McDonald Avenue and 14th Avenue. Community Boards were established by charter revision in 1977. The idea behind community boards was to bring government closer to the people. Community Boards hold Public Hearings on important matters and have input into New York City%u2019s Capital and Expense budget.
