Notified About

  • 55 Charles Street East Toronto, ON - Toronto

Every morning - as early as 530am - between 6 and 10 dump trucks park along Charles Street East, with no regard for how close they are to stop signs, making it unsafe for cars turning right on to Charles from Church, and especially dangerous for pedestrians. This morning, two different vehicles came within inches of me as I was crossing Church Street on the north side of Charles.

UPDATE: December 7, 2012 - The construction trucks this morning were so close to the NE corner of the intersection, vehicles speeding off Mt Pleasant on to Charles who then turn right on to Church are turning the corner blind, because they have to travel so far around the construction truck hugging the corner that those turning on to Church do not see pedestrians, cyclists or people just trying to safely walk their dogs.

    .....

The sidewalk parking has ended for the most part, so there is improvement in that regard.

I understand condo construction is important to the City and those people who build and buy them, but not so important as the safety of existing residents.

I live on a one-way street in downtown Toronto near Bay & Wellesley. We regularly get drivers - especially Taxi cabs - driving the wrong way on our street. Some drivers are unaware of their violation, while others do it on purpose to avoid a roundabout way of accessing Bay St. I have attempted on many occasions to contact my city counselor and the city police about this problem. The police have investigated and can only take an after-the-fact approach by monitoring and ticketing the violators. I have appealed to the police and the city to consider a sustainable way that is similar to other local neighbourhood one-way streets to reduce the frequency of these violations before a serious accident or fatality occurs as a result. Recently, my communications on this matter have not resulted in any acknowledgement from any public party I have contacted. I have attached a photograph of the most recently witnessed violation that occurred around 10:00am on 2013-03-08. Can you help our community fix this problem? If not you, who can?

Parking paint on road leads one to believe parking is ok here. When you're quite sure you have parked legally, (and running late for a meeting), you don't check parking signage. Furthermore, parking pay meter is located 3-4 car parking spots east, exactly where you would expect to find it (mid-point between front and back end of available parking). In addition, the fire hydrant is located on the other side of the sidewalk beside a building - again not where typically found so I failed to notice it. Besides this being a trap, the distance from the fire hydrant to the sidewalk is 9' 1" away. If a car is parked 9" off the curb, it's a full 3 meters (9' 10") from the fire hydrant and is therefore fully accessible to fire crews. This cost me $100 for "park 3M of fire hydrant" but fighting it in court tomorrow April 15 at 3:00pm. It's obvious by the road paint and the location of the parking meter, parking was permitted here previously. The city erected signs - but they should also get rid of the "bait" - the road paint! A passerby told me he sees ticketed cars here all the time so clearly I'm not the only one to "take the bait".

Have you ever tried to cross University Avenue at College Street? If not, you have 26 seconds to scurry across. I can run 10 km in an hour, but I can barely make it across University at this intersection before the lights turn red. Yes there is an island in the middle of University Avenue, and yes I could run across but let's not forget that Toronto's major hospitals are located just south of this intersection on both sides of University Avenue and many seniors and individuals with mobility issues are trying to cross this street. The last thing I want to do is to run into any of these individuals. In contrast, you get 50 seconds to cross College Street at this intersection - so why such a discrepancy?

How many cross walk/traffic lights does this city need on this short road ?? Less then 40 feet to the north is a cross walk/ traffic light that is HARDLY used by the students in the area. How about enforcing the Jaywalk law first before adding more traffic delays. When on foot in this area, I never have a problem using the traffic lights to cross that are already in the area. This is insane!

The sidewalk on Cawthra Square at Jarvis is covered in dirt. This turns into a mud patch in the rain.
