The intersection at 18th and Independence SE is extremely dangerous for both vehicles and pedestrians. There are frequent accidents, caused by low visibility, heavy traffic, frequent speeding by EB cars on Independence eager to get off surface streets and onto the RFK/295 access road, and impatient drivers on 18th crossing Independence recklessly. Cries out for a light. I have personally been nearby for three multi-car accidents at this intersection.

There is a constant stream of cars heading north on Potomac Avenue SE from 17th to 19th, using this a cut-through from the SE Freeway to the Anacostia Freeway. Either a no-right-turn-on-red sign needs to be added at 17th or a Hawk light needs to be added to cross Potomac at the Cemetery entrance - which doubles as a dog park, and thus gets a lot of pedestrian traffic, especially after work, when the road is busiest.

This intersection was torn up in 2009 and never properly repaired. Final grading, paving, and street / traffic light installation has not yet occurred, representing a hazard to motorists (unpredictable bumps, above-grade manholes) and pedestrians (uneven curb cuts) alike. Several inquiries have been made to the city and to Councilman Wells, with no action taken. Please help!
