Notified About

  • Regent Park Toronto - Toronto

On Thursday March 21, 2013, at approximately 2:45 pm, I stopped at the Spadina TTC station to buy some tokens. Nothing out of the ordinary - I put $20 into the machine and received 7 tokens and some change, and a battery. To be exact, I received $1.40 in change, plus an Energizer battery roughly the size of a nickel.

Yes, a battery. It's a thin battery, about the same diameter as a nickel. I also received a Bahamian nickel instead of a Canadian nickel, but I didn't mind that so much as the pineapple on it is rather cute, and I always think it's interesting to see what other currency looks like.

Unfortunately, a battery is not currency. There is no nation of Energizer that I might one day visit. I'm not even sure what sort of device the battery might operate. It's not the sort of battery with which I'm familiar.

The incident occurred at Spadina station, Walmer St entrance. There is no person there, just the TTC machine. As I generally only take the streetcar, there is little need for me to actually enter a subway station, except to buy tokens. So, there was no one to complain to at the time of occurrence.

I'm actually quite shocked that this can happen, because vending machines regularly reject my legitimate coins.

I have attached a picture so that you may see what I am referring to.

    Sincerely,
    MK

  • 650 Parliament St Toronto, ON - Toronto
The southbound curb lane of Parliament Street from Bloor St. E. south to Wellesley Street E. is in very rough condition, particularly the pavement that runs immediately adjacent to the curb. This damaged road condition is especially dangerous to cyclists. This stretch of Parliament has been patched many times and needs to be resurfaced properly.
  • 212-242 River Street Toronto, Ontario - Toronto
There is a massive obstruction in the centre of the road at River at Gerrard (on River, north of the intersection, as you come off Bayview). it has been there for months but no work ever seems to be done there. As a consequence, traffic going to and from Bayview has to squeeze past, and there is no left turn from River onto Gerrard. When will this purgatory end?!
  • Sackville & Dundas Toronto, ON - Toronto
As a new resident of Paintbox Condominium, I am regularly using the pedestrian crossing at Sackville and Dundas. I am also regularly nearly killed by motorists who make no effort to stop. I've witnessed this happen to hundreds of people over the past few months. Despite reporting this to the police, nothing has been done and cars continue to blaze through the flashing lights, nearly killing innocent people.

    Dear Fixer,

Our problem is the noise of the regular false fire alarms from 210 Oak Street, the huge ugly assisted housing apartment blocks at the corner of Gerrard St and River Street. Yesterday the maddening BEEP BEEP BEEP of the alarm sounded twice, followed by the usual six fire trucks, sirens screaming. Last week there were 3 events. There is never a fire, and if there were, no resident would respond anyway. I pointed this out to the manager at 3 a.m. one freezing morning in my pyjamas and he became furious and yelled “How many apartment blocks have you managed?” (None.)

Yesterday when I complained about the noise pollution to the police they said there’s nothing they can do, but kindly transferred me to the fire department, where I was told that if these are “malicious fire alarms” the company is charged “tens of thousands of dollars” in fines per year. She didn’t know if this law is actually enforced, but in any case, taxpayers would be paying the fines, and clearly they have no effect. We’ve been woken by these false alarms for the last ten years.

I think the building is poorly managed. As you recall, its residents have been shooting each other lately. Also, the inhabitants of the building facing River Street have a habit of “airmailing” their garbage, some of which is still hanging in the trees.

    Can anything be done?

    Yours sincerely,

    Simon Leigh

There are only 2 ring-posts near the grocery store. Sure there are lots near the coffee shop just around the corner, but that's a long way to walk with a sack of potatoes. More bike parking in view of the store please.

  • 685-699 Dundas Street East Toronto, Ontario - Toronto
Every day hundreds of cyclists travel into the downtown core from the east via Dundas Street. High ridership is encouraged by designated bike lanes that travel roughly 3.5km from River Street to Kingston Road in the east. In recent years the route has been disrupted between River and Parliament Street by the ongoing redevelopment of Regent Park. There, damage by heavy equipment and temporary road works have left gaping pot holes in the street. While pot holes located in the centre of the street have generally been patched, those along the side of the road have been left untended. This forces cyclists to pull out from the curb and ride towards the centre of the outside lanes creating dangerous conflict with passing vehicles. While some disruption is only natural, in some cases these unpatched rough spots and pot holes have been impeding cyclists for over a year. The Regent Park redevelopment is a great city-building investment but something should be done to patch the street between River and Parliament Street before someone gets hurt.

Pole needs to be straightened. There is also a 'one way' sign on the east side of Sackville (front of 467) that is also bent.
