  • Clearfield Virginia Beach, Virginia - Northwest
This morning at 6:00 AM Clearfield was closed at the intersection with Cleveland St. causing drivers to turn around and go back to Witchduck and Virginia Beach Blvd to reach their destination. Detours should be marked at the point where the detour begins not at the point of the problem.
  • 3312 Princess Anne Road Virginia Beach, Virginia - Virginia Beach city
Heading NE on Landstown Centre Way and turning left onto Princess Anne Road there are no turn lane markers for the dual left turn lanes. Vehicles are constantly using the left most lane and then moving to the right while turning. Any street with dual left turn lanes should have lane markers.
  • Traffic Signal Acknowledged
Witchduck Road & Cleveland St Virginia Beach, Virginia - Northwest
Traffic signal appears to be on a timed cycle or broken since Witchduck was repaved. North bound vehicles turning left onto Cleveland have to wait through the entire cycle even though there is not traffic in any other direction. Camera sensors do not appear to be working or are broken.

  • 3200 Dam Neck Road Virginia Beach, Virginia - Virginia Beach city
This morning (Thur.) at approximately 8:50 AM a street cleaning truck was operating on Dam Neck Road at the intersection with Holland Road. This truck was hard to see due to large vehicles behind it and was travelling at about 5 mph on a road that is posted for 45 mph. It was in the left east bound travel lane with numerous vehicles behind it. Vehicles in the right travel lane were passing at 45-50 mph making it difficult and hazardous for vehicles in the left lane to pass the street cleaning truck. Operation of this sort should be confined to areas that need cleaning such as the Ocean Front or Town Center and if needed elsewhere the operations should only be conducted at times of low traffic usage, i.e. 2 AM to 5 AM.

Of late there has been much discussion of raising property tax to support various projects and initiatives. While some of the planned projects such as raising teachers' pay and possibly light rail are worthy of consideration others are not such as the proposed arena. I would like to submit that there are other projects that should be considered and are not even mentioned. One serious situation is Providence Road from Kempsville Road to Birks Lane. This short stretch of road is woefully undeveloped and dangerous as it now exists. During the rush hours anyone making a left turn from Providence ties up traffic for blocks. Furthermore, the lack of any space to walk or ride a bike makes this road very dangerous, let alone try walking a dog on Providence. The new city rule of giving bikes at least three feet of space forces drivers on Providence to either cross the center line or stay behind the bike until is it safe to pass.
Other road projects of questionable value go ahead without any input from citizens and residents. I cite the realignment of Princess Anne Road as an example. This never ending project is supposed to improve traffic flow but has had little affect so far. There is plenty of room along Providence Road to add turn lanes and sidewalks/bike paths. Laying culverts in the open drainage ditch along the road would provide sufficient space to all both. It would also eliminate the difficult mowing that has to be done along the ditch.
During the late 80's a referendum was held to widen Providence but was voted down by residents that did not want to lose their use of the right-of-way along Providence. Unfortunately I was on active duty at that time and unable to vote on the project. Years later I complained of the condition of Providence Road to the Virginia Beach highway/road department and was told that there were no plans to improve Providence Road other than area around the sharp turn just before Birk's Lane. To date nothing has been done to improve the turn other than add flashing warning lights.
I live in Bellamy Manor Estates and to walk anywhere I am forced to take my chances along Providence Road or walk more than a mile out of my way to get anywhere. It is time to do something about this road which runs through one of the older neighborhoods of Kempsville borough.

    Thank you,

  • 474 Kempsville Road Virginia Beach, Virginia - Virginia Beach city
The new traffic signal sequence at Kempsville Road & Princess Anne Road is hazardous. Having all left turn lanes from Kempsville moving at the same time brings cars in the right side lanes too close together. The dashed lines for the turn lanes are close together, the formers sequence of having the opposing left turn signals alternating was much safer.
