  • 40th St. And Spruce St. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Cobbs Creek

Around 7:30 on a Tuesday morning, SEPTA bus #40 made a left turn right before its light turned red. It immediately stopped to let around 6 passengers off, including a couple elderly folks who needed extra time. The problem is the bus was standing across the westbound and eastbound car lanes, and was blocking the eastbound bike lane. A bunch of cars and bikes waited an extra minute or so.

No big deal except that on Spruce St., wheel traffic gets stopped at every light anyway, and also something similar happened at 40th and Market St. a few minutes later.

  • 4040 Spruce St Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Cobbs Creek
Giant pothole in the east-bound Spruce St. bike lane. It's 1 ft deep * 2 ft long * 3 ft wide. On the side of it is a pile of hardened asphalt. The two together take up the entire width of the bike lane. Pretty scary.
  • Power out Archived
Foster And Avon New Haven, CT - East Rock

Mine and several of my neighbors' buildings lost power about an hour ago. My neighbor spoke with UI, who told her to expect a fix in a few hours.

Has anyone heard any other estimates? Anyone know what went wrong?

  • College St Between Elm And Congress New Haven, CT - Town_Green

For several blocks from Elm St. to Congress Ave. there are stripes of newly refilled asphalt, where it looks like conduit or pipe work has been done and then covered.

There have always been fine cracks between the old and newly refilled asphalt. These cracks are slowly growing. The cracks are a few feet left of the parking lanes, exactly where cyclists are told to ride.

College St. in this area is rife with double-parking, so cars frequently change lanes. The potholes are still shallow, but they're wide enough to track a tire, which could easily knock cyclists underneath moving cars. It's especially dangerous when it rains because drivers rush and can't see well, and cyclists are more likely to slip.

    A couple solutions:

    1. When refilling partially cut asphalt, use something besides asphalt to seal the joints, or put a new, smooth top layer down over the entire span of the road.

    2. Paint bike-share symbols along College St. in this area.

    3. Designate a loading area and decrease metered parking time limits during frequent loading hours (I know, this would suck; I drive, too). This would reduce the amount of double-parking and thus chaotic driving.

  • Temple St. New Haven, CT - Downtown

There's a 1.5-foot-diameter and 8-inch-deep (at least) pothole in the center lane of Temple St, just south of Elm St.

The pothole's location is especially dangerous for bicyclists because it's in a place where cyclists pay heightened attention to rapidly shifting traffic, due to buses' lane changes.

  • 40 Temple St. New Haven, CT - Town_Green
I think 40 Temple (housing dozens of medical offices) could use a bike rack. There are many meters, but when I park my bike on these meters, I worry that I'm making it difficult for 40 Temple's clients to enter and exit their cars. Many of 40 Temple's clients are elderly, sick, or for other reasons use a walker or wheel chair. It'd be nice to keep access to their cars clear.
