Walk lights not working. Buttons react to being pressed but pedestrians aren't given a walk light when the traffic light changes.

I just hit a deep hole on Market St going West my truck has large off-road tires and it felt like my tire almost got eaten. Smaller cars may not be so lucky. I totally couldn't see the hole with the rain.

Thanks for setting up the new light, but it is not functioning properly. Yesterday evening cars were waiting a very long time (5+ minutes) for a green light on St. Paul St. There was quite a backup.
  • 91 Cherry Street Burlington, Vermont - Burlington Electric
The new traffic light at St. Paul and Cherry has been flashing since it was installed about 8 months ago. Ever since then it has been causing confusion with drivers and pedestrians.
Pedestrians press the buttons to cross, but nothing happens, and they keep pressing it. Drivers often don't stop for pedestrians because there is a signal there (so they normally wouldn't need to). I saw one person a couple days ago dash across the crosswalk because cars wouldn't stop for him.
Cars are also not properly treating the flashing red light as a stop. Some drive right through like it's not there. Others give a quick tap of the brakes, but don't stop for vehicles waiting at St. Paul St. or for pedestrians.
It's a nice traffic light setup. Can we turn it on please?

Next to the Probation and Parole driveway on Cherry St. there is a fence with a small downward extension that seems to be used as some kind of retaining wall. The fence is starting to fall apart and a bunch of needles can be seen through an opening. They are starting to spill on to the sidewalk. There is also a small box in there which may contain other items that children shouldn't encounter.

The signal at Aspen Dr. At Dorset does not trigger reliably when cars are in the left lane. They often sit for a long time waiting for the light to change. The right lane seems to trigger it right away as does San Remo.

There is no crosswalk at the Shelburne St. and Ledge Rd. intersection. There is no other way to cross Ledge Rd. or Shelburne St. except to cross here. There are crosswalks at all the other surrounding intersections.
This is definitely the most dangerous point of my 2.5 mile walk downtown, with cars northbound on Shelfburne St. taking the right at high speed (because of the curvature of the intersection on the south side), and cars on Ledge Rd. turning right and in the "rotary" turning left, fixated on finding a break in the Shelburne St. traffic and not watching for pedestrians.
A crosswalk would hopefully help make drivers aware pedestrians are present, and pedestrians won't have to feel like jaywalkers when crossing Ledge Rd.

Water shutoff in front of hydrant is leaking. Water is running down storm drain. The leak is pretty slow, but there's a permanent puddle.
  • 198 Colchester Avenue Burlington, Vermont - Burlington Electric
Cars stopping at the Trinity Campus portion of the Colchester Ave / East Ave. intersection often stop too far away from the light for their car to be recognized by the signalling equipment. These cars will sit there for multiple light cycles waiting for a green light, with cars lining up behind them until someone else gets out of their car and tells them to pull up.
One of those small "Stop here on red" signs or painting a stop line on the road would probably solve it.
  • 10 East Avenue Burlington, Vermont - Burlington Electric

The signal controlling the right turn from Colchester Ave to East Ave is confusing. It is controlled with an arrow signal and a lit "no turn on red" sign. At times the "no turn on red sign" is not lit when the arrow is red (depending on the crosswalk signal). Drivers usually take the lack of the "no turn on red" sign to mean they can turn right after stopping, but this maneuver is prohibited in 23 V.S.A. § 1022.a.3.B where it states "No motorist shall turn right when facing a red arrow signal indication unless a regulatory sign is present which permits this movement." So essentially the lit "no turn on red" sign is unnecessary. To accomplish the traffic flow the city seems to intend a flashing red arrow could be used, which would allow the right turn after stopping, or a lit sign specifically permitting the turn on red could be used.

  • 122 Fairmont Place South Burlington, Vermont - South Burlington
The sidewalk that runs up the hill on Proctor Ave runs directly to Rice High School. There is no connection to Fairmont Place, requiring you to walk through the Rice parking lot (if their gate is open) or over the grass and over/under the chain fence that runs on the South side of Proctor. There is no shoulder on Proctor so walking on the side of the street is not an option. In the morning or afternoon when students are arriving or departing the Proctor-Rice-Fairmont intersection can get very busy. Cars go quite fast for the conditions and usually don't stop for pedestrians, probably because there is no sidewalk and no crosswalk. The pedestrian or child on a bike is in a bit of a no-man's-land. The intersection is also not at all accessible for the disabled and a detour to Shelburne Road is so far that it is impractical.
This can be seen pretty well on the Google Street View. http://goo.gl/maps/hMO22
