Water from Hazelton Ave again overflowed at 3:30am this morning into the Backyards of 36, 40 and 46 Beaufort Ave. In a matter of minutes the backyards were completely overwhelmed with water. Water entered finished basements.

Homeowners had to use industrial grade surface pump exiting by fire size hose to remove water from back yard.

This is the sixth occurrence of the overflow that has been reported to the town since 2011. Three of the six occurrences have happened in the last 5 months so the problem is increasing in its frequency.

Photo shows the depth of water reached against 46 Beaufort’s foundation.

The same overflow happened and damaged homes in 2011 during Hurricane Irene, 2013, 2016, and August 8, 2023 and Dec 18,2023.

During heavy rain (most recent Friday Oct 21, 2016...4th time in last 3 years) storm water pools on Hazelton Ave. and eventually runs in one massive rush through the backyard of #31 Hazleton down to Beaufort backyard (including into a swimming pool which then overflows also).

All in a matter of seconds a giant pond and overflowed swimming pool is left in 3 Beaufort backyards. Homeowners are unable to address this amount of water through any barrier, yard regrading or sump system.

Storm water from Hazleton and those streets higher up (Arch, Highgate, etc) must be redirected to stay on the streets and not go into yards. Attached map shows flow of water.

  • Lyons Ave. Needham Massachusetts - Dedham
Cars on Lyons Ave. trying to make a left onto West St. (135) during busy times (7:15am) have to wait too long. The issue is complicated by the glare of the sun. The cars on 135 are traveling at a higher speed and many of them are trying to make a left onto Lyons further jumbling things up and making it particularly difficult. Please have a traffic expert look at this situation. A light was here a few years ago which worked and something is needed to make this safer.
