  • Blake St And Valley St New Haven, CT 06515, USA - Westville

Extremely Dangerous Intersection for vehicles and pedestrians.

First off, this had always been a particularly nasty intersection which should be largely avoided, however over the past year the issues have compounded and worsened due to the new NHPS school opening in the corner. additional traffic (both vehicular and pedestrians) now coming through the intersection.

    Several issues at this intersection.

Left Turn Signal needed for drivers making left turn from Blake onto Valley. Currently no signal at the intersection so at many times drivers try to rush to make turn immediately as light turns green or make turn after light goes red-to-green.

Traffic blocking intersection. especially at heavy traffic times drivers are regularly entering intersection when traffic not moving which causes more delays.

More pedestrians moving through intersection. many families are now coming through the intersection as their kids are attending ECMS. these pedestrians are put in peril due to the Dangerous intersection. additional traffic especially noticed at drop off and pick up times.

Crossing Guard needed. for some reason NHPS hasn't supplied a crossing guard to assist families at this intersection. all other local NHPS schools (West Rock Stream, Edgewood, Mauro-Sheridan) have crossing guards but not ECMS.

problems are only going to get worse as weather gets warmer as more families will be walking or riding to school through this intersection. This is a particularly bad area for billing as well. almost impossible for a seasoned Rider to get through this intersection safely but now there will be many kids trying to ride to school.

City of New Haven and NHPS: Please, please, please do something to address these issues before kids get injured.

  • Goffe Street At Dixwell New Haven, Connecticut - Dixwell

This past Saturday afternoon I was walking down Goffe Street while worker was blowing leaves from the new Yale University lot at the corner of Dixwell and Goffe St. These leaves were being blown off of the parking lot and onto the sidewalk on Goffe Street.

While rather inconvenienced as I was holding my two-year-old and pushing a stroller, I had to walk onto the street for this to be passable, and the worker surprisingly did not stop blowing leaves as I walked by.

I didn't think much of it at the time - there's really nothing else he could do and I assumed that the leaves would be picked up after he was done blowing the parking lot.

However it is now Wednesday and the leaves are still covering the sidewalk on the entire side of the parking lot making it very difficult to walk on, and making it impossible to get by with a stroller. I hope that Yale University will do its job to remove these leaves from the sidewalk for the betterment of the community.

  • Found iPhone Archived
409 Orchard Street New Haven, Connecticut - Dwight

Found an iPhone on the street at the Edgewood/Orchard intersection this morning. Looks like it had been run over so screen is very smashed up. Power is on, but due to condition I am unable to make calls to find owner.

Please contact me and identify phone (model/color/carrier) and happy to return to rightful owner.

  • 243-245 Temple Street New Haven, Connecticut - Town_Green

On Sunday mornings/afternoons, cars are allowed to park in the far left lane despite posted 'No Parking Anytime' signage.

Presumably, this is allowed by the City during Church services but if that is the case why isn't signage updated to acknowledge the permitted Sun AM parking?

More importantly, why does the city allow this to happen? It makes crossing Temple Street dangerous due to limited visibility and the typical high rate of speed on that street. It also creates dangerous situations when drivers/passengers are entering/exiting their vehicles.

These vehicles should have to find parking in legal meter spots or garages.

  • Westwood And Central New Haven, Connecticut - Westville
Homeowner allows hedges to take up approximately half of sidewalk space on westwood ( northeast side of central/westwood intersection). Has been an ongoing issue for years, but gets worse due to growth. Makes it very difficult to use sidewalk.
  • Whalley And Howe New Haven, Connecticut - Dixwell

Dangerous pothole(s) located on Whalley (westbound side, near entrance to gas station). This is really more than one pothole, it's a collection of potholes that have been previously patched, but that are in rough shape. The location of the potholes makes it very dangerous for cyclists as it is unavoidable unless swerving several feet into the lane. However the potholes are located at the end of a curve (at a point when cars could be coming from several different areas) which makes it difficult to be aware of all approaching vehicles.

As a cyclist, i navigate this stretch on a regular basis and have not found a safe way to bypass this trouble spot.

  • 236 Edgewood Avenue New Haven, Connecticut - Dwight

At the Edgewood/Beers Street intersection (in front of Troup School) I have witnessed on several occasions the Crossing Guard directing traffic. I am wondering if this is within the scope of their job duty and responsibility?

I am not questioning the need for crossing guards and have no issues with them stopping traffic as pedestrians are crossing. But I do question the need for crossing guards to direct traffic when no pedestrians are present.

This past Monday, March 2 I was traveling down Edgewood and witnessed a crossing guard stop traffic on Edgewood to allow a school bus and several other vehicles cross through Edgewood. The crossing guard actually ended up totally blocking traffic because there was not adequate space for vehicles to move across Edgewood.

  • 868-880 Chapel Street New Haven, Connecticut - Town_Green
Traffic moving on Chapel Street (towards State Street) and turning left onto Church Street should have a dedicated left-turn arrow. Typically, if a car is waiting to turn left at this light, only one car can get through during a regular green light cycle (either right at the beginning or at the very end, as the light turns red). This creates traffic backup issues, and creates dangerous driving situations.
  • 258 Church Street New Haven, Connecticut - Town_Green

Both sides of Church Street, between Elm and Grove have not been plowed/cleared to the curb. Because of this, cars are essentially parking at meters 5-6 feet from the actual curb and are, thus, parking in a regular lane meant for traffic. On a daily basis, this creates traffic backups and dangerous driving situations.

Why has this block not been cleared to the curb? And I continue to wonder why the City allows meter-parking even if one cannot get within several feet of the meter. I would think that if a car cannot park within, say 2-3 feet of the meter, then you should not be allowed to park there.

I live in Westville and my street has been cleared to the curb several weeks ago - why did this not happen downtown?

  • 200-214 Elm Street New Haven, Connecticut - Downtown

On a regular basis (1-2 times per week) a delivery vehicle will block one or two lanes of traffic during morning rush hour. I drive through, typically around 8:30am and this lane blockage creates traffic back-ups for several blocks (at least back to the Broadway/York intersection.

I would suggest that the City of New Haven implement several measures to alleviate this problem:

    1) Do not allow delivery trucks to drop off during rush hour periods

    2) On streets with heavy rush-hour traffic volume, implement a no parking ban at street meters (7-9am / 4-6pm). This is something that other cities do with much success.

If 1 and 2 cannot be accomplished, then create a large 'Commercial Loading/Unloading' zone that can accommodate several delivery vehicles
