4200 Standish Ave S Minneapolis, MN 55407 - Standish
This part of the city has tremendous foot traffic with families walking with strollers, kids and dogs. For years we have pleaded with our neighborhood @#$%'n for a crosswalk somewhere between 28th Ave and Cedar Ave.
Can we get this done?
There is a meeting on April 1st at 6:30 at the SENA office (42nd & Cedar) to discuss traffic calming on 42nd St. This meeting is a good opportunity to hear ideas and share your own.
The SENA Business Development and Transportation Group has started to brainstorm ideas. I think now with the warmer weather this has a little more traction. Go read the SENA e-democracy site for more notes.
Seen at the Minnesota State Fair yesterday. We could use several of these along Cedar Ave, 42nd St and perhaps 28th Ave in the Standish-Ericsson neighborhood.
If a standard crosswalk is not considered adequate (though it should be), perhaps a HAWK crossing might be considered (sort of a half-traffic-light, but only for pedestrians). The "false sense of security" business is based on research from the 70s -- basically the idea being that if we don't mark crosswalks, we successfully intimidate pedestrians into not asserting their right of way (and thus reduce crashes). More recent research shows that simple police ticketing for a few weeks significantly increases crosswalk compliance by drivers. Which approach seems better -- enforcing the law, or intimidating the most vulnerable users of the road?
