Where North Hills Drive ends at Lead Mine Rd, there seems to be constant confusion and/or traffic flow issues related to how the lanes curve from North Hills Drive onto Lead Mine Road.
Issue 1:
The striping on the road is a bit difficult to see, which seems to add some to the confusion of what lane the cars should be in during the left turn.
Issue 2:
The right lane on North Hills Drive feeds the majority of lanes on lead Mine Rd, causing traffic to back up considerably within this lane. This then leads to the left North Hills Drive lane filling up mostly with traffic that either does not understand that they are not in the proper lane for where they are trying to get to, or with people that know that they are in the wrong lane, but would rather just cut across the other lane of traffic mid-turn than wait in the longer line of cars.
The left lane of North Hills Dr feeds into the left-most lane of Lead Mine Rd, which then becomes the middle left turn lane (lane 2). This lane turns onto east-bound Glenwood, and becomes the exit-only lane for the Inner Beltline.
The Right lane of North Hills Dr feeds into the right-most left turn lane of Lead Mine Rd (which becomes lane 3). This lane turns onto east-bound Glenwood and becomes the exit-only lane for the Outer Beltline.
What this means is that the left NHD lane feeds traffic to:
1. South-bound Lead mine to East-bound Glenwood.
2. South-bound Lead mine to East-bound Glenwood to Inner Beltline.
The right NHD lane feeds traffic to:
1. North-bound Lead Mine.
2. Straight across Lead Mine into complex.
3. South-bound Lead mine to East-bound Glenwood to Outer Beltline.
4. South-bound Lead mine across Glenwood (becomes Blue Ridge Rd).
5. South-bound Lead mine to West-bound Glenwood.
Giving the North Hills Dr lanes that turn onto Lead Mine Dr a wider radius turn and shifting the lanes that they feed into, over one lane to the right, seems as though it would greatly reduce confusion and traffic issues. The lanes would not take such a sharp left curve, allowing the confused drivers to more easily stay in the proper lane during the turn. It will also better distribute the traffic between the two North Hills Dr lanes, preventing one lane backing up and the other lane filling up with the impatient and reckless drivers.
The new lane destinations would also just make better sense. The left North Hills Dr lane feeds all traffic going left on Glenwood, including all Beltline traffic. The right North Hills Dr lane feeds all traffic for Lead Mine/Blue Ridge and traffic turning right on Glenwood.
If this just seems like a minor pet peeve, try this: drive down North Hills Drive with the intention of getting onto the Outer Beltline. This would be the right lane of North Hills Dr at Lead mine. See how many people cut across this lane mid-turn. I drive this route often, and I would estimate that I have a close-call with another car 9 out of 10 times.
