Overview
So, you've decided that you want to help bring SeeClickFix to your town. We're glad to hear it. As a SideClick you have a lot of support. Read on for some advice that has worked for other SideClicks. We're here to help with any questions you may have. After reading, feel free to email us your questions or ideas to team@seeclickfix.com.
You're probably already familiar with what SeeClickFix can do. Just to recap:
- See - see a non-emergency issue in your neighborhood.
- Click - open a ticket describing the issue and what can be done to resolve it by searching for the incident location using the map. Next click on the map and fill out the quick form.
- Fix - governments or others are notified and address the issue
More specifically:
- Seeing - you're pretty much on your own here. We leave it to you to spot the issues in your neighborhood.
- Click - report issues outside your home, call one in on the way to work, ask your neighbors if they have any issues and report for them.
- Fix - Start by attaching your own email to a watch area. Next attach your local officials' emails to watch areas so that they recieve alerts when issues are created.
Pull Strategy
We can't wait for the day when all the cities in the world are SeeFixing with us. Until then, we are counting on citizens to be the first to recognize the value of our services and to lead the way. We call it our pull strategy.
For SeeClickFix to work properly in your community, you'll want to have both SeeClickers and SeeFixers. The question people have is how to get started. If there aren't either one yet then how do you get people to SeeClick? If there are no SeeClickers then how do you make sure that people are SeeFixing?
Remember that in any community, there are people whose job is resolve issues that come up.
What to Do
- Tell Your Friends. Talk to your friends and encourage them to SeeClick. Some people visit the website and don't end up opening an issue. You'll be amazed how many people will get excited once you've told them about the site - so make sure to encourage them to actually use it. Or they could call in.
- Tour Around (aka SeeClick). Drive or bike around your neighborhood to spot potholes, graffiti, blocked drains, broken lights, vandalism, etc. Click your issues and start to show others that someone cares about your town.
- Email Everyone. Email your friends or others via email lists (aka listservs) that you may know. We've got sample emails in the toolkit.
- Facebook em. We have a facebook app...Look it up.
- Blog It Up. If you or a friend have a blog, write about SeeClickFix. If you want to give your users more features, you can embed SeeClickFix in your website. Check out the toolkit for instructions.
- Flyer. Post or hand out flyers about SeeClickFix. You can grab the flyer from the toolkit.
- Find the Fixers (aka SeeFix). As you start to have people SeeClick, it's time to find the SeeFixers and get them involved. You can either call or email people you know, or search the web or phone book to find the local authorities. Once you find their email address, don't be shy about using SeeFix to draw an area and fill in the official email address of the local fixer. We've had a lot of success with this method and have been thanked for introducing SeeFixers to a new tool. In New Haven we started by enticing city councilman to create watch areas. Next we showed merchant associations with "clean teams" the power of seeclickfix by getting them to also become watchers. The next step was city hall where we created a watch area for the anti-blight agency. Immediately the agency starting responding to issues, closing them and claiming increased efficiency within weeks.
- Get Press. Reach out to any reporters you know. Or send a press release using the sample from the toolkit.
- Get Political. Connect with local politicians. We bet your local alderman, city council member, board of supervisors, mayor or first selectman would love to be seen as results oriented and responsive. Check out the advantages for politicians in the toolkit and talk them up. Encourage them to talk about it publicly, to endorse it and to set up SeeFix watch areas.
