Drivers intimidating cyclists Open

30 Eld Street New Haven, CT - SOHU

This happens all over my route between the train station and East Rock, but today it was here. A driver came up behind me in his black Honda and was sounding his horn and revving his engine. I was already as close as I dare get to the parked cars for fear of getting doored. The driver proceeded to squeal his tires passing me with about a one foot clearance instead of the three feet required by law. He then cut me off at the intersection, but I am sure that had more to do with the gesture I gave as a reaction after being nearly run over by this maniac.

I would love to again see the signs on the buses reminding drivers to share the road with cyclists.

  Self justification created to permit yourself to write your own rules and regulations. If the laws aren't applicable then they should be changed, not bent. Just because you believe them to be inapplicable based on your own sense of logic and rational. Are the laws regulating the operation of a bicycle not supposed to apply when you feel them unnecessary? If so, you're allowing operators of cars to self-justify their own disobedience of their own applicable laws. If a bike can run a red when there is no traffic around, why can't a car? They aren't harming anyone. It's not that your rationale doesn't make sense, in the common way, it's just that it opens the door to everyone creating their own rules and abiding by them in their own way.

  There really is no winning in the battle for supremacy between cyclists and motorists. Both sides are aggressive in exercising their "right to the road" and the fact that both sides perceive the other as "flouting the law" (i.e. cyclists running lights, passing stopped school buses, etc... and motorists "buzzing" cyclists, failing to yield the right-of-way, etc...) creates a feedback loop that will only make things worse as more cyclists hit the streets of New Haven. I was in NYC yesterday and noticed that physically separate bike lanes are going up everywhere. That really is the only solution. If Manhattan can create a separate bicycle infrastructure, than I don't see any reason why any other city in the country can't do the same. The one thing that has to happen is that the city needs to recognize (as NYC has) that cycling is EQUAL in legitimacy as a mode of transportation, to motor vehicles and then act on that recognition.
  
  Until then, if you are a cyclist, do this: When you come to one of these instances where you feel as though you are 'OK' to disregard a traffic law (running a light, passing a stopped school bus, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, etc...), think to yourself, "If I were in a car, would I do it?" If the answer is no, then don't do it. Cyclists have the same legal rights AND RESPONSIBILITIES as motorists.

  I wonder if the City / State or Federal Government is footing that bill for new signs ? Yes signs are needed , but so is enforcement of the speed limit..I just find it a bit uncanny , unnerving maybe , perhaps suspicious , that i would watch out of my window two paid consultants pull a pretty cheap bike out of their trunk, use a cheap chain and attach it to a street sign , hop in their vehicle only to watch a thief , from vehicle also unscrew the sign and put the bike into trunck , leaving sign on tree beltway..Only then to watch a Traffic n Parking truck tote the sign away , a sign would never appear again at that locale..Mostly street sweeping warning signs.
  p.s. I saw the first two up in city hall and pretty much knew who they were , old grads get promised the world and refuse to go away.
  Yes the police were called but everyone in the ER ( east rock) knows where that leads to - nothing

  Working for USPS in several townships I have seen a drastic differnce in the care for the roadways. What I have seen here in New Haven shows a complete lack care - worker spots a pot-hole...pulls up..drops a shovel of asphault and taps down with the same shovel. Hours later majority of the fresh asphalt is worn away/missing from car tires pickup up small bits and pieces. Now in a neighboring area two city workers work in unison to patch up several potholes. One will go around and blow out any loose debris or use a broom. Next worker would use some type of tar gun and spray the perimter of the pot hole. Finally the hole is filled with fresh asphalt and a small handheld compacter is used to pack the fresh asphalt down and make it even. All loose debris are swept again and the job continues.
  
  Perhaps what really needs to be done is the people in charge of managing these repairs and cleanups need to be placed on review for I feel they lack the motivation to do visual inspections or lecture their workers on properly maintaining our roadways. I don't enjoy placing emphasis on the people actually out there doing the hard work, but a supervisor should be out on the road correcting or retraining these workers

Cars not yielding to pedestrians Open

Orange St And Pearl St New Haven, CT - SOHU

Unless you step out into the crosswalk, and risk getting run over, the vast majority of drivers don't yield to the pedestrians trying to cross the street at this intersection. I've seen it happen in front of the police who've done nothing about it. Once, in front of the police, I had to step out in the street and put up my hands to help a woman with her young child cross the street while at least two drivers laid on their horns.

Can we please get an officer who will do their job and actually stop drivers and give them tickets for this behavior? It is getting dangerous and I really don't want to see anybody get hit.

  Still nothing done. I was driving and stopped to let someone cross and was beeped at by the car behind me. I really hope that it doesn't come to someone being hit for this to change.

  What is/are the law(s) about crossing with or against a signal? Many times I have come to a situation where I have a green light and there is a "Don't Walk" signal on the sign - yet pedestrians are still crossing the street.
  While I agree there is a blatant disregard for traffic laws by drivers in New Haven - I believe it holds true for most travelers - regardless of their choice of transport. Many times I've come across pedestrians crossing in the middle of a block, jumping out in front of cars, bicyclists riding all over the place disobeying traffic signals, etc... If we're going to ticket drivers in sting operations, let's open this can up to ticket all people who break the law. A law is a law - and shouldn't discriminate against one type of citizen or another.

  I agree clarkst. What especially annoys me is when pedestrians hit the button and then cross illegally. If you're to attempt it, don't hit the button. HOWEVER, drivers have a particular obligation to be respectful because they are operating deadly weapons. Pedestrians don't kill people, drivers kill people.

  There is no light at Pearl and Orange. The law is that you must yield to pedestrians. End of story. If pedestrians are trying to cross in front of you and you don't have time to stop, you are driving too fast. Drive under the speed limit and you should have no issue stopping for pedestrians. Fines for speeding in residential areas need to be doubled and actually enforced.

There was a utility crew that made a cut here for the construction in the new pizza restaurant. Now the cut is sinking making a reverse speed hump.

Homeless man dwelling Open

There is a homless man who has creating a dwelling over the past year or so. He is located on the right hand side of the Exit 3 (Trumble Street) exit which happens to be in clear view of people's properties on Bradley Street. There is quite the collection of trash and tarps.

  Outreach and Engagement at Columbus House have contacted 3 people who are using the area as a camp. They were able to make good contact with one of the people and had them in their offices for an intake - they were very nervous however and may not stay. Columbus is sending more people out to do outreach for the upcoming storm and trying to help in any way -

Low Level Street Lighting Needed On Upper State Street Open

We have a beautiful tree canopy on Upper State Street but unfortunately it makes the busy restaurant corridor very dark at night.

It would be really excellent to have a low level street lighting like other commercial districts in the City.

  I agree that pedestrian lighting is really important to creating a healthier and more efficient city. There are a number of other posts about pedestrian-scaled lighting in New Haven on SeeClickFix, and also requests have been made by neighborhoods and business districts all across the city.
  
  Please contact newhavensafestreets at gmail.com if you'd like to volunteer to work on a citywide campaign to coordinate these efforts.
  
  This wouldn't replace local organizing, like around this issue here on State Street, but would be a way to take the first step of getting people who are currently in different neighborhoods to talk with one another and share best practices around lighting.

Theft (Packages) Open

Eld Street New Haven, CT - SOHU

Given the current epidemic of package-from-doorstep theft in East Rock---we were hit today---I thought it might be useful to open a thread about possible steps. Barring any police assistance (child, please!), we're on our own.

My suggestion: We all start leaving empty Amazon delivery boxes on our doorsteps. That would make it difficult for the thieves to identify which homes have a (real) package and those that are empty. It strikes me that the thieves want to move quickly; if we're adding lots of boxes, it slows them down, and it increases the chances that one of us will see them. If enough of us do this, it may make theft unprofitable since the thieves will faced with a higher chance of being caught and a higher chance of scoring an empty box. Any other ideas welcome, but I'll be putting out boxes in the morning and on random days thereafter.

  It's not far from the truth at all - In regards to Billy White it's spot on - Det.Willoughby was arrested for pilfering snitch funds , the city allocates money to pay neighborhood specialist and others to be informants..In regards to any apprehended person at the least they'll spend a night in jail , I doubt somebody bonded this person out - I hate to be wrong about someone and honestly feel bad but I was probably right

Signs Acknowledged

No Speed Limit signs on State St heading North/east between Grove St and Mechanic St (at least). I was recently driving the distance between Grove St and Mechanic St with someone tailgating closely, so I was looking for a speed limit sign to confirm I was not in the wrong - but there aren't any!

  This is probably a good thing because signs cannot adjust for changing conditions and what not. Drivers should rely on their own judgement rather than that of a sign. Who is behind the wheel after all?
  
  If you think people are driving too fast, just keep driving at a rate that you feel is safe. If drivers behind you disagree, they can always pass you.

  When a speed limit sign is not posted, the speed for that street is 25 mph (I think its 25 but i do know its a standard mph). In any event, its called a speed *limit*... aka even if you were going 5 in a 40, you're still in the right....
