Extending the greenway across Webb Bridge road is great! Adding the sidewalk between Westwind and Lake Windward Drive is also great.
As I understand these projects, there will be a connection to the Greenway on the south side of Webb Bridge Road and no connection on the north side of Webb Bridge Road. There will also be a "missing link" of sidewalk between Westwind and the Greenway.
I have two concerns:
First, pedestrians from Windward will likely use the sidewalk on the north side of Webb Bridge Road and cross WBR at Westwind to get to the Greenway. This will create a potential safety hazard.
Second, the additional sidewalk will also result in more bicycle traffic. Because of proximity to the paved greenway both drivers and cyclists are confused about where they should be riding. The sidewalk is for pedestrians only, it is not wide enough for bikes. Bikes should use the road as your "share the road" sign indicates. Unfortunately most cyclists are are either uninformed or afraid to use the road and ride on the pedestrian sidewalk. This is a significant hill and some of the cyclists ride the sidewalk at high speed. This is a hazard for pedestrians, particularly when walking a dog that gets startled. The other problem is drivers, I am an avid cyclist myself and frequently ride this stretch, always in the road as near the edge of the road as is safe depending on how much debris is near the curb. Many drivers believe that bikes should be on the pedestrian sidewalks. Drivers frequently blow their horn or shout at me to get on the sidewalk where I belong, or even in a few instances throw things at me. I don't mind kids riding on the sidewalk but adults don't belong there.
Bike traffic traveling from Lake Windward Drive to the greenway will ride on the north side of WBR and also have to cross WBR near Westwind to get to the greenway.
I think the best solution is to clearly mark bike lanes on the road in this area so both bikers and drivers know that is where the bikes belong and to complete the missing link on the north side of WBR and provide access to the greenway on that side also. If that is not possible then a pedestrian crosswalk may be needed on WBR at Westwind.
I look forward to your feedback, perhaps you have already addressed this, if so thank you. These comments are based on my current understanding of the projects.
Sorry for the long message but I wanted to provide a clear explanation.
