These steel wire contraptions are ostensibly intended to help firefighters locate the plugs should they be covered with snow. What they really do is present an impalment hazard to pedestrians and bike riders since many are bent or have shifted and have their sharp ends pointed in such a way that can stab a passerby in the eye. The fire department should plot all hydrant locations on a map and use GPS if necessary to document ecah location. In a town which refuses to fly the U.S. flag daily at Town Hall and no longer puts up any secular "holiday" displays, you'd think that this issue would have been addressed.
