Description

I have a security light in my back yard that is owned by Duke Power. Duke charges a flat monthly rate for the operation of this light. On the morning of March 24, I reported to Duke Power that the light had gone out and needed to be repaired. In the late afternoon of March 29, a Duke Power representative came to fix the light. There had in fact been a short. Once it was fixed, I called Duke Power back to ensure that I would not be charged for the full month because I did not receive service from this light for five days. I was told that I would receive a credit of $2.36 for the days I had no service. I asked the representative to make a note that I would be deducting that amount from my April payment. My May payment came in the mail the other day. Duke Power not only didn't honor those days I had no service, but in fact charged me a LATE PENALTY because I didn't pay the $2.36! Of course, I called them again. I was told this time that I would NOT receive a credit for the days the light was out! I demanded to speak to someone in management about the issue. After all, no reputable company ever charges for services their customer does not get. When the manager called me back, I got the same story. Duke Power will NOT credit me for the five days I had no security light, and expect me to pay for the full month! My point is NOT the $2.36 cents that I should have been credited as well as the additional $.02 they charged me for a late charge. It's that I feel like I'm being ripped off by a billion dollar corporation! If they have done this to me, they have done it to countless other customers and have put millions of dollars in their own pockets by simply ripping off their customers! It's a matter of principals! I truly don't feel that Duke Power should be allowed to get away with this! I would expect something like this in a communist country, but not in ours! Is there anything you can do to help me alert other Duke customers to be cautious of the charges on their bills? One would think that we could TRUST a company like Duke to be honest, but apparently not. The sad part is, there isn't even another electric company that we can turn to for our power!
