We definitely need more trash cans. The average amount of steps a person will hold a piece of trash before they litter is 12 paces.

One trash can was installed along this stretch, located near the curb at the pedestrian crossing "bulb-out" by the Methodist church (1330 Lakeshore). Public Works Maintenance Dept. prefers curb-side trash cans because the City's franchise agreement with Waste Management provides for free daily pickup of City trash cans by the WM garbage trucks, but only if the cans are adjacent to the curb. The fewer trash cans that City staff has to pick up gives them more time for gardening tasks. Along this stretch the lawn is very narrow and people on the lake-edge path don't have to walk much out of their way to take trash to the curb. Curbside cans here are convenient for all the people on the sidewalk/multi-use path. It appears to me that 99% of the litter along this stretch isn't from people on the path dropping trash, but rather is from people sitting in their cars dumping it out their windows. Continued regular street-sweeping supplemented by manual pickup in the gutter is an unfortunate required maintenance activity here. All that said, I agree that one more permanent trash can located down opposite 1500 Lakeshore would be a good idea, so there's always a can in sight. The temporary cardboard ones are not good because they get tossed in the lake by vandals, blow over, or get emptied by people scavenging for cans. The permanent ones have covers that keep the trash in and have a pocket to keep cans/bottles separate.
