Just a suggestion of something we did on Truman Street. After complaining to the NHPW and LCI for weeks about 'neighbors' who would not clean up the weeks of overflowing garbage on their front lawn (they piled trash in recycling toters so NHPW would not empty them, and their small bags of household trash were just thrown on the ground, bags ripped open by feral cats and other creatures, and decaying food and dirty diapers strewn all on the corner property where children wait for school buses), a group of neighbors took action into our own hands. We got gloves , trash bags, rakes and shovels, and 4 of us went to the premises, knocked on the door of all 3 floor apartments. We nicely introduces ourselves as their neighbors and told them we were there to clean up 'their trash' that was on 'their lawn', and would they like to join 'us' ... offering them gloves and trash bags. Of the 3 families, one 16 year old girl joined us as we cleaned up 10 trash bags of garbage. We talked with her, found out she had dreams and goals, and made a friend. She thanked us for caring. That was almost 1 month ago. That property has been clean since, the tenants sort their garbage from recycling, and put their toters out in time for NHPW to pick up. I know it's not your trash, but it is OUR community, so maybe someone has to take the initiative to set the example. Better yet - I'll put my money where my mouth is. Just say the day and the time and I will meet you there with enough gloves and trash bags (even some trash picker up tools) for whomever else joins us and WE WILL GET IT DONE - and set an example of what caring neighbors do.I'd love to meet some more good citizens and we might neet some great neighbors. How about it?
