Drivers heading both north and south on Shattuck Ave around 55th Street regularly merge into the bike lane to pass cars ahead of them that are waiting for a break in traffic to make a left turn onto a side street. This is not only illegal, but also very dangerous for bicyclists as they may have a driver merge unexpectedly into their lane with little or no warning, often at a non-intersection location.

Solutions for this issue might include 1) adding left turn arrows for both sides of Shattuck Ave at 55th, then changing the signal phasing so that north and south bound traffic here have their own phases, 2) prohibiting left turns at this and/or other intersections along Shattuck, or 3) sending out law enforcement to write tickets to any drivers who merge into the bike lane to pass other cars
