Well for sure it is increasingly rare for tenants, neighbors, teens to take the initiative to remove snow anymore. Wish I was in high school again--me and my buds would make a bundle with these snowfalls! How about instead of simply fining, the City create a pool of funds from the fines to pay un/underemployed to clear snow?
I agree. What a disgrace! It forces pedestrians to walk in the streets. I don't care if many of the houses are rented, people still own the houses and should be responsible for clearing the snow on their walkways.
Agreed--the City's leniency is incomprehensible. The neighborhood has plenty of senior citizens who become unable to leave their houses after a snow storm.
@Kev , Then less people will clear their walks , less incentive , just sit back and let other people pay for your duties.Even though it's on the right track , but stick with public parks and maybe sewers etc..
No tenant,be they undergrad, graduate student or working willie wants to leave their abode and have to trudge through ice and snow just to..,It's not their responsibility, shovel a sidewalk for free while the landlord basks in Hawaii or Florida - No break on the rent as the landlord never asks you to or signed you on as a caretaker
@ Kev...my teen daughters went shovelling in westville and even with all the unshoveled sidewalks they got told by most people they were going to do it themselves later. Update:many walks still not shoveled
Yes ... many people are offering to shovel other walkways and sidewalks but I notice they are being told "no" ... most likely because the homeowners are too cheap to pay those offering something and want to just avoid having to clear their walkways altogether. Shame.
Two young men just made $20 off me with the most recent snowfall. Always happy to help young kids with initiative and snow shovels. Heck, I would pay more in ibuprofen and hot compresses the next day if I had to shovel. :-)
@JustaGuest - They are probably asking tenants who answer the door or are coming/going etc. if they want the sidewalk shoveled (landlord lives far away at times) Some landlords own more than one home in an area, and they actually don't live that far away , some actually claim that they ,"Can't find help".
In response to the post above: it varies from one rental contract to another.
If you are a tenant and your contract does not specify that you are responsible for shoveling, then please place a call to your landlord and remind him/her that this is their responsibility. No one wants to do it for free, of course, but if you live here it is still up to you to care and be good a neighbor.
I concur that the City should diligently fine law breakers; otherwise, the growing number of rental properties will infringe on the rights of law-abiding residents and tax payers.
No one wants a scenario in which tenants are some sort of bad tourists and absentee landlords are rewarded for not fulfilling their duties.
