I'm glad someone raised this issue, Yes, someone does get caught from time to to time but its not enough to make a statement. I also find this appalling that people are too lazy to drive to the dump but rather dump it in a park or in front of a abandoned house or a dark corner with no lights, Most don't have the money for the dump fee and if they do , they just keep it and dump it on the street. This is a issue all over the city.I would assume that none of the folks that do this have any investment in our city to try and make it look nice. I go by Quarry Park at least 10 times daily just on routine calls or patrolling my district , and I pray to god every time I go by there that I drive up on that someone who is dumping trash or furniture. I agree with xyz , we need camera's strategically placed at Quarry Park even if its temporary just to catch someone doing this and then put their face in the police blotter part of the newspaper. It is making our city look like crap. I will try to do my part in trying to combat this problem. If you see someone illegally dumping trash , take a second and write down the plate number and make/model and color of the vehicle and a description of who is driving or dumping and Call my office number 203-946-7163 with that information.
The city allows you four free passes a year for yard waste and four for household items. Maybe if the city started to publicize this it would cut down on illegal dumping.
There is only a charge if they come to your house, I think it is $75, it use to be free. The city should start thinking about allowing one free pickup a year in an effort to cut down on illegal dumping.
I'll agree on publicizing the dump and the coupons for using the dump. I believe the dump allows you 4 items per dump(4 chairs or 4 couches or 4 tables etc etc) and most of the time I see the piles on the side of the road(like all around Peat Meadow Park and the corner of the frontage rd near there) it is not much more than that. Sometimes the scumbags dump clothing and God knows there are a million places to donate that.
One thing I see a ton is people dumping right in front of the apt they just moved out of! like nobody sees that happen? really?
thanks for at least letting us know you are out there and listening Sgt. .
I want to add that the city makes you jump through hoops for these coupons, go to one place and get the coupons, then go to the dump if they are open. Why not send them to everyone? one per address could be cheaper then having our parks guys employed full time picking up garbage.
Thanks for feedback and ideas to help solve illegal dumping issues. We have been working with NHPD to try and encourage community people to share any information that they may have concerning the actual dumping. We are trying to establish dumping patterns and need the community's help. Cameras could then be set up based on high frequency of dumping issues.
