enormous expanse of asphalt is Open 10 People want this fixed

way too much pavement here. look at what other cities have done to convert pavement back into usable open space and calm traffic. also there is currently no pedestrian signal here, no crosswalks at some intersections, and distances are far too great for comfortable crossing, particularly for elderly or disabled residents.

We definitely need some crosswalk and walk signal work done here, it's a dangerous place - particularly for the families with young children in the area.

I believe one way this could be accomplished would be to make East Street come into State at a much more perpendicular angle. It's not as if all that many people continue from East straight onto Mechanic Street. Here's a link to a photo showing an example where making an intersection more square significantly reduced crossing distances and created new public space: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdot_photos/3840463988/in/photostream/

I would love to see some design suggestions for this Intersection.

Ben and I have discussed how great it would be to just have the curb extended out and squared off, so drivers can't hit the turn off state fast--that would be plenty large enough to add outdoor seating for the subway or another small green area like the one in the triangle.

I agree that some design sketches would be helpful here. It is a somewhat complicated intersection. If the city has studied this in the past, can they post their general observations/findings here?

I absolutely agree - this intersection is NUTS.

I heard the city is looking into this issue again. Would be great to do something this summer, as the bridge closing and economic downturn may negatively impact the area.

my boyfriend and i watched a woman try to cross the street with a stroller the other day and she had to start running. this is really too much street space, and i think it adds to the feeling of the city unofficially ending there-- cars start to drive faster out of town (i notice this when i bike to the grocery store down state street).

i thought about this some more yesterday. ben is right on about extending the curb in front of subway for perhaps some outdoor seating, and an island in the center with some planters & such.
