Addition of valet parking services at train station have created bottlenecking in pass through, reduced temp parking has people temp parking in bus stop and valet at garage entry has people backed up into the street. A luxury service addition is smar▶Archived
Put simply, the addition of valet service use in the pull through reduced space for standing/parking for pick up drop off and clogged the one travel lane. I imagine now is not the time for a redesign that involves financial investment so if I am recommending anything it is remove the valet service either to the street or the back lot and re establish the pull offs for pick up drop off. Currently you have to stand in the one travel lane, pull off to the handicap space or otherwise clog the flow to pick up drop off on perhaps 1 in 3 occasions.
Yes I agree that it's a mess. I'm there twice daily and the valet service setup has put a big crimp in the flow of traffic, especially during the evening rush hour. Basically the taxis had a dedicated lane until now, from Union all the way to the pickup spot at the station, but the valet stand is interrupting that. Consequently taxis have to pull into the car lane to get around the valet stand and then pull back into the taxi lane. This causes considerably more congestion and sometimes taxis just can't get through until the car lane moves. It's nuts, it's poor planning and it's emblematic of the NH Parking Authority ridiculous decision making procedures that clearly do not involve planning and consideration. I won't even start on the completely untrained people NHPA has "directing" traffic at the station, which only adds to the chaos, frustration AND lack of safety at this heavily trafficked location.
I can't speak to NHPA decision making, but otherwise the above comment accurately explains the concerns I have regarding the current situation. I would not have described the flow management as good before the addition of valet, but now I would describe it as poor. My opinion would be to immediately address issues in a manner that does not cost money: 1. location of valet and 2. I acknowledge that better training of the person directing traffic might be a good idea - I had not thought of 2 before because I had not deduced that traffic direction could possibly have been that employee's function based on what I have seen people performing this function actually do. If directing traffic is that employees charge they are both given inadequate structure of flow to work with and are performing the job unsuccessfully. At the very least the flow design should be altered to give the employee some hope of success.
