Description
There are MULTIPLE dangers at this intersection. It is a traffic nightmare before and after school. It needs to be evaluated because there are several factors causing the dangers daily. School officials, media, and local police have all been notified multiple times. TWO CHILDREN HAVE ALREADY BEEN HIT BY CARS. Please can we get the intersection of Washington and Willis assessed for safety? Spring is on the way and there is going to be a tragedy if something is not done.

Many of the schools have multiple entrances; however few have an entrance with a traffic signal such as Willis/Washington. The School and City have worked together to provide safe drop off around the school’s property for both students and visitors. The school has also sent out notices to parents about the proper locations to drop off students. The school could employ other methods such as having staff assist and direct traffic like other communities do that were listed below, or providing additional areas on their own property to allow for student drop off.
The accidents that have occurred were determined to be the fault of both the pedestrian and the driver. In one instance the student was not in the crosswalk when he stepped into traffic, after the parent had dropped the student off in a prohibited zone on the opposite side of the road. There are designated drop off areas all around the perimeter school that are established to provide the safest path for the student to access the school property. Many of these locations are infrequently used as they are inconvenient for the parent. Should a parent disobey the signage or drop off in another location that is not designated for a safe drop off, that parent has then become a potential cause for a problem.
The City has observed traffic activities around the Middle School and have noted the following take place daily during the school year: double parking, turns made without signaling, u-turns, dropping students in prohibited zones, blocking fire hydrants and crosswalks, blocking traffic and standing (idling cars in zones where this is prohibited), dropping students in condo parking lots, in neighborhood driveways, in the middle of intersections, stopping to drop off in the middle of travel lanes and on the opposite side of the road-forcing the students to cross the street and walk in between other vehicles also dropping off. All of these activities are unwarranted, prohibited or against the law and set a bad example for the students who will someday be drivers themselves. There is a much higher chance of an accident when these activities occur, and they will continue to occur until the parents dropping off students change their behavior. Parents should allow themselves adequate time to get to the school and not be rushed; choose drop off locations, not on convenience but safety; obey signage and laws; and respect pedestrians and other drivers.

Sorry but the district and city have not done enough. It started with the district back dooring the decision to cut general education busing, There was no real talk about this issue until it was too late. It also is very difficult when they made the Middle School and the High School start / end times the same. This is very challenging when people have children at both schools. They always say try and leave yourself enough time but with working parents and this issue it's easier said then done.
That said I do agree many kids are being dropped off in area's that are not safe. But I've witnessed many time students darting across Washington without the walk light and they find it amusing. That is where the city or district needs to step in with an guard or an police presence.
Please don't belittle us saying "Parents should allow themselves adequate time to get to the school " as it's an challenge for us without district busing.

FOR QUICKEST RESPONSE, REPORT TRAFFIC SAFETY ISSUES TO ROYAL OAK ENGINEERING
Royal Oak, Mich. — The City of Royal Oak Department of Engineering Department asks residents and motorists to contact the agency directly to report road safety issues.
Several Websites are now encouraging the posting of road conditions and safety concerns, however, these sites do not share these complaints directly with the proper agencies such as Royal Oak or RCOC. The City and County Agencies DO NOT actively monitor these websites and in most cases will not respond directly
Residents can contact Royal Oak's DPS directly via telephone at 248-246-3300 to report a specific and detailed road condition complaint. Traffic safety concerns regarding parking, signage and signals as well as traffic movements should be directed to the City of Royal Oak Engineer at 248-246-3260. A specific location or address is extremely helpful in identifying the location in the field. Additional information is located on the City of Royal Oak website: www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us
The issue at RO Middle School should also be brought to the attention of the School District, PTA or other group involved with this location. The City has always assisted the school district in helping with traffic issues at their locations. The elimination of bussing that forces parents to bring the students to the school by car is the underlying cause of this problem. A traffic study by the school was done and the result was signing many additional areas for dropoff and pickup. It is the school's responsibility to educate the parents where these locations are, and It is up to the parent to follow the plans.
