Description
There should be some type of chicane/road split to allow those turning right off of Beardsley onto 110 to be able to make the turn. Also a speed bump or two on Beardsley would be nice to help reduce speeding. Card do not slow down when coming off 110 and it could prove fatal.

Could not agree more. I have posted over and over about the dangers of this split and the speeding and garbage. This is more than a police issue. We need someone to address the corner , the speeding and need for speed bumps or a stop sign. Road is getting worse and no one wants to review this issue.
When will this end? Unfortunately when a major accident occurs or someone at town hall creates a pile-up

As for any speed humps on Beardsley; this is a local road and should be addressed with your Aldermen. I would caution though that such infrastructure can be dangerous in and of itself unless located on a straightaway and properly warned and marked.
The City's cooperation in this matter will be critically important due to the impacts to local roads and properties.

This proposed intersection project (State Project # 126-158) to reconstruct and realign Beardsley, School St & Birdseye with Route 110 was initiated by the City and the Valley Council of Governments in 2001 with the intent of improving intersection geometry. CT DOT cancelled the project in November 2011.
At that time they indicated that they had evaluated the proposal and while they found that "... this multi-legged intersection... is not a desirable geometric configuration", they also found "... no pattern of traffic accidents or fatalities... to justify the expenditure of state and federal funds to effect a desirable change."
The project was subsequently dropped from the Department's capital transportation improvement plan and cancelled. Inquiries regarding this decision can be directed to Mr. William Britnell, Principal Engineer, CTDOT Highway Design at (860) 594-3274.
I reviewed the Uniform Police Accident Data for that intersection for 1995-2011. During that 16 year period there were a total of 37 accidents (avg: 2.31/year, although there were no accidents reported in 5 of those years) with 0 fatalities. The breakdown by intersecting street consisted of: 19 on the Beardsley leg, 16 on the School St leg and only 2 on the Birdseye leg.
Crash severity was classified as minor in every case. All but 6 accidents involved 2 vehicles. The 6 single car accidents involved animals and/or the car leaving the roadway. 24 accidents did not require any medical treatment for vehicle occupants and 13 accidents had occupants treated on-scene by EMTs. No occupants from any accident were transported directly to the hospital. There was no pedestrian involvement in any of the accidents.
Of the 37 total accidents, predominate types of crashes were 14 accidents involving rear-end collisions, and 10 others caused by vehicles turning on intersecting paths. The remaining 13 were a variety of other types of collisions with fixed objects (utility pole & structures), moving objects (animals) and cars backing into traffic.
Contributing factors to these accidents are as follows: Speeding (1), Improper passing (2), Failed to Grant right-of-way (13), Violated Traffic Control (1), Following Too Closely (12), Driver Lost Control (2), Animal or Object in Road (3), Driver View Obstructed (1), Unsafe Backing (1) and Improper Turn (1).
In sum, this intersection has a relatively low level of accidents, all very minor in nature. While speed does not seem to be a factor in accidents, "following too close" resulting in rear-ends could be an indication of speeding. As for the Birdseye leg, while it appears that most accidents occur when cars try to turn right onto Rt 100 as stated by wrstanton3, this is most definitely not the preferred movement to get to Rt 110 West. Westbound traffic from Beardsley should ALWAYS use Nicoldale Road to travel West on Rt 110 (Leavenworth Rd).
The other issues are enforcement issues and should be reported to the town. I hope this was useful to residents in the area.
