Description

Cars and Commercial trucks and vans continually block the street and sidewalks. This is two way street that Engine 16 uses to enter the firehouse, residents are blocked from accessing their homes and people are forced to walk in the street.
The city acknowledges this condition and does nothing. Asst Fire Cheif Black says ' it is a parking problem' while it delays the emergency responders from doing their jobs. The police stop into the source ot the problem, Durso's garage, for donuts and ignore the problem. The no parking signs are removed as fast as they are installed with no action by the parking and traffic police. It is not acceptable to "Acknowledge' an issue and do nothing! Waiting for a car accident, a walker clipped by traffic on Townsend, a fire or medical emergency response delayed because this continuing problem is ignored. The owners of this business do not care but the people in this neighborhood do care and expect that the rules are enforced for all.

Let me respond before I close this issue: I don't know of one cop including myself who has stopped or has ever stopped at Durso's to have a Donut (and I have known him for over 30 years) Secondly, Durso's has been in business in Morris Cove for many years and has catered to this community and its kids and he would cooperate with any problems that he might cause a concerned citizen as he himself is a retired cop and property owner in this neighborhood..Third, if it is such a hazard for the fire department they would have surely called me and they never have, besides they drive out the garage on the Lighthouse Rd side (never an issue). The picture I have seen with the landscapers truck was not double parked and was not being fixed . he was putting air in his tire and left shortly after. Durso usually parks his cars on the property that he owns or parks them as close to his side of the garage without obstruction. besides the amount of traffic that travels down Morris cove rd. in the course of the day is very minimal at best. its either people who live on the street or the occasional lost driver. I've tried my best to find a blocked driveway or sidewalk for quite sometime and never can or have had someone call me about it. Please call the police substation at 203-946-7163 to discuss this response or another issue you may have.

I hear your disdain to my post but take issue with your response. I have spoken to the Asst Chief Black who told me he would call your substation. I have spoken to your staff at the substation. I have spoken to to the traffic enforcement officer. In my post I spoke of residents need to walk into the street on Townsend Ave rather than the sidewalks. Mr Durso my be a ex cop but has no more than rights than you or I to viloate the law. These conditions have gone unaddressed for years. Maybe your strong response gives us a clue as to why this business appears to get a pass.
Can I presume you were there while the landscaping truck was getting air for 20 minutes or maybe when John's refuse truck blocks the street for 15 to 20 minutes. The firetruck drives on the curb to return to the firehouse and you miss the point of providing free access for medical emergencies.
I also feel you are using your status as police officer to intimidate and shutdown my right to report an issue of Public Safety. I would appreciate a response from Chief Esserman of COO Smuts

My disdain comes from your disrespect and assumptions without proof and no one is shutting down your right to report anything , I acknowledged it by reading it very carefully and closed it (which is my right). I will be at the Community Management Team meeting on Tuesday night at 7pm above the firehouse on the 2nd floor, like it has been for many years. I will gladly address that issue and any other issue you may have or you can call my office at the substation 203-946-7163.

I don't go down that street too often during the day, but I have to agree with Steve........There's always someone double parked out there. Never got in my way, I can go around......But they are there!

I have posted a picture on this site which clearly shows the continuing violations that I refer to in my post. The contacts I have made to City Officials are real and the reputation of this business is documented in LCI, Traffic and Parking (removing No Parking signs).This is my proof and you might take a hint from the post from BillyR above that it is an on going issue that dates back years. I can only assume that the implied immunity you give this business is the reason it continues. I walk these streets eveyrday and tell you there is blantant disregard by the owner and his clients. Your realtionship or accquaintance with the owners, nor his contribution of Halloween Candy does not grant permission to abuse other people's rights. Lastly I agree you have a RIGHT to close an issue when you have reviewed the facts not when you react with unwarranted authority. I and others have brought this issue to the MT over the years with no results, I posted here as an act of frustration and now have the discovered the source of the issue not being resloved and it is you! How about some community policing rather than drive throughs!!

This will be my last response to this matter: you only need to make one phone call to a public safety issue and calling the fire department for a traffic problem is not the right call ,unless you know someone in the fire department, you should call your Alderman and , or, your District manager. I have reviewed and driven by and spoke to Mr. Durso about your concerns. I have gathered pertinent information through our crime analysis department about traffic accidents or parking violations in this immediate area of Townsend Ave. and Morris Cove Rd. , I have spoken to many neighbors who live within walking distance of Mr. Durso's garage and ask them about any obstructions of sidewalks,driveways or traffic lanes. I have spoken to the Alderman , Mr. Decola, about these concerns and if he has had any issues brought to his attention about Mr. Durso. . Plus the fact, that I have lived in this immediate area for over 50 years and know many of the folks who live here , even you. and I work in this neighborhood when im on duty and when im off duty because of where I live and how I care about this neighborhood (Thats Community Policing). When I see a public safety issue even if Mr. Durso causes it ,I will address it, until then , have a nice day. Again , my number is 203-946-7163.

I have no connections to the New Haven Fire Dept. I was referred to Asst Chief Black by the Chief's Adm Asst because he is in charge of operations. I am glad you finally did some investigation into the problem and not only fixated on who I am, I don' t think the managers of the click fix site intended for the City Officials to target those who present issues. To your disappointment you need to know you don't know me and I don't know you. My contact with the PDM was with Lt Hoffman. I consider this issue CLOSED

Just another day at Durso's Garage. Looks like the efforts of the PDM have been ineffecive again. The PDM has investigated the files of the Traffic Dept to see if there have been tickets or infractions noted. Sure he didn't find any because he doesn't enforce the law at this address. See the additional picture, If you need one several times a day Mr PDM please let me know so you can start a scrapbook! If this was anywhere else in his district he'd be calling for a Tow Truck and a Breathalizer.

Not an expert, but based on the photos shown, which appear to show clearly in both cases, vehicles parked on the wrong side of the road, plus blocking of the walking area by vehicles on the Durso side where sidewalks would be and forcing pedestrians into or across the street, something smells and should be checked.

Sure as heck looks like the district manager is in Durso's pocket and refuses to enforce the rules but this may not be true.

Further the photos show vehicles either parked or travelling in the wrong direction in the travel lane

Someone higher up in the PD should be looking into this deal, either to check on the district mgr., or to clear him, as I see it.

Do not know any of those involved, but something smells, and should be cleared up.

I like cops and was on old-time NHPD Chief Ben DiLieto's unofficial citizen's advisory group long before such groups became part or fully mandated.

Currently looks like Steve 46 is just being bullied

This is an example of how some animals are more equal than others. The complaint is legitimate. The garage needs more space to accommodate vehicles and should find a way to rent space to put cars so the streets are no blocked. Sounds like an easy enough fix, though space is limited around there. No one should be above the law; nor should they get coverage by police pals. Everyone- do your jobs and stop trying to turn this into a personal offense...

it's one thing to complain because you aren't getting the response you believe to be the right one, it's quite another to question a person's integrity without anything to go on except your own hurt feelings.

Steve46 threw out the first disrespectful comment and then he didn't like it when he was called on it. @What, he is not being bullied, the Sgt. stood up for himself, it's not like he slashed his tires, he felt justifiably offended and he responded in a stern but professional manner. If Steve46's feelings are hurt, then he needs to reevaluate his offensive comments before he presses the enter button next time!!!

Then again, you stating the DM is in anyone's pocket is just as offensive, so I guess you have no more manners than Steve does.

Some people being more equal than others with respect to parking is a common complaint in seeclickfix, and leads to a breakdown in people's trust in the rule of law. This is an area where the NHPD can really step up and show leadership.

I agree 100% with Karen.

Traffic and parking laws in this city are enforced willy-nilly. It's no wonder that people get upset when they get ticketed for an offense, only to see the cops look the other ay when someone else does the same thing, or similar, that they were punished for.

I can't count the number of times I've seen a New Haven cop watch someone blow through a red light or stop sign in this town, and NEVER ONCE seen them put on lights and pull the person over. It happens downtown on a regular if not daily basis.

On my street in the same district we have a nursing home with no parking signs in front for deliveries and ambulances. These signs are ignored daily by the staff who thinks of this no parking zone as their personal parking spots which leads to daily deliveries being done in the middle of the street which again leads to dangerous driving situations. Not once have I ever seen a ticketed car.
