Bob hit the nail on the head. Our street was never meant as a thoroughfare and we do not want it to be.

I disagree with one point: major engineering. We do not need it or want it. Cement barriers are cheap and easy to install. So are speed bumps. We dont want road widening (makes it less safe) or sidewalks (which does not somve the problem. We want our current road managed better than it is by going back to what it once was: safe, calm, and slow.

Pineview was evaluated for traffic calming earlier this year. It sits in 17th place on the minor project list. There is a slight chance that it could come up for consideration this fiscal year. We don’t use permanent speed monitoring signs. Even the ones on Rainwater that were installed were done on a trial basis and may be removed pending Council determination. Per Public Works: As far as a redesign, the only redesign we can think of for the sharp curve would be to flatten it to meet the design speed, however, this would likely only increase vehicle speeds along the corridor from what they are today. This is a local street so there shouldn’t be any plans for future widening. It could be petitioned for curb and gutter, sidewalk, or traffic calming (or a combination). As far as restricting traffic or permanently closing a portion of the roadway, that decision would probably need to come from either the Public Works Director, Planning Director, or City Council.

The easiest solution would be to wait until the project comes up to the top of the minor projects list. Speed bumps on both sides of the sharp curve would probably be a good solution.

Tom and I have spoke previously and I plan to request another calming evaluation once the six month wait period is over in December. With another evaluation targeted for late Jan, NCSU student traffic will be accounted for in the evaluation, which was not the case in June. Speed is an issue for ALL of Pineview, not just the 90 degree curve.

The redesign I was referring to would eliminate Pineview as a thoroughfare, moving that traffic to another artery. However the subdivisions were built with few primary collector streets between Avent Ferry and US1. Athens is the logical choice using Kaplan to access US1. However Pineview is, unfortunate to us, the most direct since it continues from Lake Dam and the area generating much of our traffic.

Speed bumps MAY cause enough pain for anxious drivers to use Athens/Kaplan to get on US1. Another option will be a council petition by Pineview property owners for street closure. And maybe a Lake Dam-Athens connector! I.E. traffic engineering studies, which I referred to in my original post.

Per RPD: We have tried to do some speed enforcement on multiple occasions and did not detect any violations. We will continue to monitor.

Another close call... I witnessed two vehicles (going in opposite directions) almost collided head on at the curve on Pineview Drive yesterday. The SUV coming down the hill was going extremely fast, hit the brakes, and slide into the opposing traffic lane, just inches away from the car going up the hill. Please help keep our neighborhood safe and address this issue.

The City is unwilling (or unaware of the need) to align Lake Dam Rd with Athens Dr.. Engineering/Traffic Planning should address this issue and its priority as part of the long range plan. Until then the 90` curve on Pineview Dr. will continue to generate "a close call".

It's really not fair to the residents and property owners on Pineview that all the high density housing SE of AFR gets to use it as a short cut to the Melbourne Road on-ramp onto I-440E. That traffic should be routed down Athens and Kaplan. A "No Through Traffic" sign would help but the real answer is either realigning Lake Dame with Athens or barricading Pineview at Swift.

Ditto to ncjks comments! However I suspect that barricading Pineview at Swift would only divert the LDR traffic to Swift and then Pineview (not Athens/Kaplan), thereby not helping the residents in the other blocks of Pineview.
A neighborhood calming study should have been completed in Feb., but due to the weather it once again may not represent a true picture of the situation. But it seems to be the only process that will get the PW Director to act, short of a Council petition.

This is Ross at 1512. Anyone interested in trying a counsel petition or get Channel 5 involved? The money is already planned that can fix this when they re-do the drain at the corner of Swift and Pineview. The city could stop at redoing the walls for the drain stream and skip redoing the bridge. That would eliminate the through traffic, save the city thousands of dollars and allow the project to be completed earlier. That's a win-win-win. It would be a shame to spend the money to put a new bridge in just to have it walled-off later. Why not kill three birds with one stone?

Per Public Works, the city will continue to work with the citizen to address their core concerns of speeding and safety through its traffic calming program and safety program.

Met with City officials over two months ago. They suggested posting an officer on-site.

Is this the best use of our police resources? I think not. Why not put in a few stop-signs like we used to have? So far the City of Raleigh has passed the buck to Raleigh PD without suggesting any long-term solutions that don't involve having an officer posted 24/7
