i lived on jolly ave south in Clarkston for 6 years from 2006-2012 and had so many near accidents and seen so many accidents on jolly because of the narrowness of the road, the bumps, and hills, and most of all because of the high pedestrian and bicycle traffic - my husband was part of a group who successfully advocated for streetlights on this road (hooray!), and we are desperately wanting to see sidewalks to protect all especially the young children.

According to the map, the area you may be talking about is within the Clarkston City limits. If that is the case, the staff at City Hall are not signed up to receive these reports.

Several years ago (before Keith was hired) Dean Moore and I talked to Mayor Ransom about having an intern monitor these postings and when reports were made that should be forwarded to the City, they would handle.

Otherwise, these reports only go to DeKalb Public Works.

i think 1/2 of the deaf school side of the street is inside the city limits and the other side of the street is not, which makes it a bit of a no man's land and hard to get either party to take responsibility for! i think it'd be great to petition the city as well - sidewalks on both sides of the street would be best. it was the county who did the streetlights a few years ago on the county side of the street, which gives me hope that the county may respond to this.

The damaged part of the road is unincorporated Dekalb County. The city limits begin approximately at the bottom of the hill, by the driveway of the Atlanta School for the Deaf.

Mary and Adam, I just noticed something weird. In the top right hand box, it shows that these postings are not going to anyone. Since this posting was made in 2009, it may be worth creating a new one and adding a photo.

Also posting on CommonPlace to get support from the community may help. I can send to the Clarkston Active Living Initiative since this issue relates to pedestrian safety education which we now are working on with the City.

AJC used to have a "fix it" column where you could send a report & photo on issues like this. I submitted something several years ago which also concerned safety for pedestrians and it got handled right away....after months of no resolution from Public Works Dept. I just looked on the AJC website and can't find it, so maybe they discontinued that service.

All the documents contain information on how to address speeders in your neighborhood & what the county requires to put in bumps. The process in getting bumps must work because Creekdale Drive got them installed which made a huge difference after years of problems with speeders.

How to I request a sidewalk to be installed on my street?

To request a sidewalk, please call (770) 492-5204. A staff member of the Transportation Division will conduct a site visit of the area, develop a cost estimate and determine the priority of the request. Sidewalk requests that are near schools, transit and parks will be given priority over other requests. Priority will also be given to those roads that are classified as a collector, minor thoroughfare or major thoroughfare. Once a priority is established, funding sources will be sought for project construction.

How do I obtain traffic calming in my neighborhood?
A.
DeKalb County has developed a Traffic Calming Program to address the concerns of the citizens within DeKalb County. For a street to be eligible for the traffic calming program, it must be classified as local residential on the DeKalb County Thoroughfare Plan and have a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less. First, call (770) 492-5219 to receive an initial interest petition for your street. This petition is a screening to determine if at least 20% of the residents are interested in learning more about traffic calming. Once the initial interest petition passes, a traffic volume and speed study will be evaluated for all affected areas within the study area. If the study indicates that a speeding or cut though problem exists, then a stakeholders group will be formed and along with DeKalb County staff to develop a traffic calming plan for the area. To ensure citizen input, the development of the plan can take up to one year. The plan will then be presented to the Board of Commissioner’s (BOC) for approval. Once approved by the BOC, a petition for the installation and establishment of a special tax district will be circulated. A minimum of 65% approval from the property owners is required to install traffic calming devices.
