Traffic backup at Arco, Fell & Divis. is Open 31 People want this fixed

We who live in the western half of SF are forced to rely heavily on Fell & Oak Streets. Any blockage on those streets is both inconvenient and a safety hazard.

It seems that at least half the times I'm on Fell at Divis., there is a backup of stopped cars in the left lane, waiting to pull into the Arco gas station here. This is inappropriate anywhere, and dangerous on such a major artery.

I see two possible solutions:

1) Require the Arco station to redesign its layout so cars can wait on premises, not on the public street;

2) eliminate 3-5 parking spaces on the left side just before this station, to accommodate waiting traffic.

Enforcement would probably help too.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, San Francisco residents need gas.

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, Would you like to comment on this issue? Many citizens are concerned about it. http://www.seeclickfix.com/issues/717 Thank You.

Since a private gas company has moved into the old 76, the price is more competitive. The traffic jam is still an issue but it is not as bad as it used to be. I agree Arco could create more free space on their lot, but is that possible? Have you spoken with the Shell gas (the one with the car wash service) and see if they are willing to lower gas prices? That would reduce the jam along Divisadero, which in turn, would reduce the jam along Fell.

Yup, have the Arco build a 2nd story to their lot so that they can accommodate all us needing gas.

The queue of vehicles frequently blocks the bike lane, the major route to the panhandle and GG Park. This forces cyclists into fast moving traffic in the adjacent lane. This is a major safety issue for all road users in this area.

Called in issue to 311 who will forward issue to DPW. Service request # 411729.

There's also a gas station further down on Fell at Masonic drivers could go to instead. I hope DPW makes cars blocking flow of traffic, especially bike traffic, to keep moving.

Suggestion: eliminate 2-3 parking spots just before the Arco in-ramp. Then waiting cars can back up there rather than in traffic lanes.

You must not own a car. What happens if there is more than 2-3 cars backed up? You have the same situation again.

This showed up on the New Haven list of "top clickets" for some reason! Must be a bug in the program :) Hope you guys can get a fix, though!

It would help enormously if they would just enforce the arrows painted on the ground which are there to direct people into and out of the lot in a manner which flows properly. I cannot tell you how many times people try to skip past the line and enter through the exit... since tank access is usually to the rear of a vehicle, this often leads to not only traffic jams, but unreachable pumps. I would love to see those spikes installed to prevent this, along with a big "DO NOT ENTER" sign! Cheaters are lame!!!

How much does a driver save by waiting in line here as opposed to buying gas across the street? Is it really worth the wait?

This issue has become a non-issue since 76 (on the other side of Divisadero & Fell) has turned into Spirit. Spirit is offering competitive gas prices, enough for the long queue at Arco to go away. It seems supply has met demand in this instance.

Peter wrote on 12/11/2009 at 04:47AM
Mr. Kim - I respectfully disagree -- that hasn't been my experience since the Spirit station opened. I still see a traffic backup blocking the left lane most times when I pass here during daylight. I've only seen it regularly clear at night, well past rush hour.
