In the Fall of 2012, NSTAR Electric completed its Cooling Pipe Project in Cambridge. The purpose of the project was to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the existing electrical transmission mains throughout the city. The project included the installation of heat exchange units within each substation and the placement of the cooling pipeline conveying dielectric cooling fluid under various streets between the stations. The streets that were impacted included Putnam Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue between Putnam Avenue and Harvard Street and between the Cambridge Street Tunnel and Waterhouse Street, Quincy Street, The Cambridge Tunnel, Waterhouse Street, Chauncy Street, Garden Street and Bay State Road. A section of Concord Avenue between the rotaries and Terminal Road, which are both within the jurisdiction of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) were also impacted.
On Monday, August 12, NSTAR Electric’s contractors, Vittiglio Construction and DeRoma Construction, will mobilize to Quincy Street to begin the restoration phase of this project. All of the roadways and sidewalks that were impacted by this project are expected to be restored by the end of the calendar year.
