Description

The new bike lane going in on Elm St is on the right side of the street sharing space with the CT Transit Bus stop in the Green. Because of parking on the upper block, buses must cut across the bike lane to reach the stop and then swing wide into the bike lane to turn right on Temple. This is dangerous for cyclists! Bollards can't be installed because of the parking, which if removed could make way for a dedicated bus lane.

The right-hand side bike lane also prevents cyclists from safely turning left at Church or Orange, very popular routes to East Rock where many cyclists live. Bike boxes could help with this safety issue. Are there any planned?

Anyone have ideas on how to keep people safe on Elm St?

See parking at top of the block on Elm between College and Temple. If removed the buses could have a dedicated lane an cyclists could have bollards protecting them.

Can bike boxes help? What happens if you are beginning traverse a bike box from the right to the left and the light turns green? You could get caught in the middle with moving traffic. When I'm on a bike and I plan to turn left, I don't wait until I get up to the stop bar to do so. I merge with vehicles well before I reach the approach of the intersection so that I am in the correct lane to make a left turn.

How will that keep Yale vehicles and others from parking in the bike lane as they do that everyday blocking traffic???- yesterday there were two buses blocking that lane and when I asked a Yale Officer to address the situation he responded- "Well where would you like to have them park." I said THATS NOT MY PROBLEM. So apparently its ok to block Elm street if you can't think of or find a spot to park.
This must be a new policy.
To the Police District Manager - why do your people drive around these situations instead of issuing violations.???

Left turns, right hooks and bus invasions are the issues. I concur with the comment that the safest strategy may simply be plan ahead, occupy your lane and signal your left turn but that will never help the timid and less ex

perienced riders. Lanes are nice, but can lead to unreasonable enforcement actions against bikers in some cities. How about a lane to the left of the bus lane, bike box and left turning arrow on a light delay? Neither overly restrictive nor overly expensive.

I'm with cgull on this. Take the street. Occupy the lane. And watch out for other vehicles (and pedestrians) in the road. At least buses have predictable behavior, are big objects and drivers worry about losing their livelihood if the err. It's the 17 year old kids from Cheshire who blow through red lights and hit police cars (earlier this week on Temple and Elm) that I worry about!

Looks like bike boxes are planned at Elm and Church! Between that and the suggestions for merging to the lane you need, it seems like cyclists have some good safe options for riding downtown! Closing this, but feel free to reopen if you have more to add/discuss!
