Townie: An private property owner cannot create a nuisance for its neighbors - ask any lawyer. And under CT law, it does not matter who was there first. Ninth Square is a neighborhood, and the city of New Haven has been encouraging families to move here. People like me who moved here knew that cities are noisy, and I don't mind the usual street noise or the legitimate businesses like all the neighborhood restaurants. But the fights, screaming, and shooting that happen when the clubs get out on weekend nights is NOT reasonable or legal. Guests will not stay at my place on weekend nights because it is impossible to sleep through the noise. Something has to change.

There have been too many shootings in the area around these bars over the past two years. Combined with the fact that enforcement has been limited (except for the highly visible presence for a few weeks in November, which should probably be brought back), I'm sure that more than a few people have begun avoiding the area.

so people want the one of the only clubs that is popular with young new haven residents shut down?? there are already plenty of bars/clubs for yalies, young people residents/natives of new haven deserve one too. if fights are the problem then that should be resolved, but dont ask for the club to be closed down. as for it being a neighborhood, well its part of downtown, why would it be quiet?

LaLa - if I had a dollar for every time a New Haven resident said to me that this city is louder than NYC on the major avenues -

It is a city, and residents expect a level of noise. But the level of noise is unheard of in any other community or city - there are over 10,000 residents downtown that have opted to live there and the fact that laws and ordinances are being broken and not enforced is the issue.

"Center Street Lounge was the source of alleged problems after midnight Sunday morning. Cops arrested two men and seized a loaded CZ52 semi-automatic pistol when responding to a hit and run call in the parking lot next to the club. Hours later a woman showed up at the Hospital of St. Raphael saying someone had struck her in the head with a gun at the club."

I completely agree that Center Street Lounge needs to be shut down. I live near this place and I don't feel safe at night when they let out. There has also been countless shootings due to the clientele they cater to and many other neighbors have moved because of loud music and the shootings.

Center Street Lounge is far too loud for its location. The clientele on certain nights also adds additional danger to the local area. The area restaurants suffer because many regular customers would rather stay away from the neighborhood on club nights.

Does anybody have an update on any of the activities here this summer?
