There is a study currently in effect for this project. Review the web site. http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/hamptonroads/i-64_peninsula_study.asp If you want this project to move faster make sure that you attend the meetings. Understand the study is scheduled to be completed until Early 2014. Then the design will start and then the construction. Make sure when the state asks how you would like to fund it you tell them there is ways to fund it like raise taxes, insert tolls are the most common ones. I have found that contractors have a tendency not to do road projects free, they are in it for a profit. They are aware this needs to be done but remember they have to have someway to fund it. Then the project will remain moving forward.
That sounds like a great plan. this will make this problem that they are working on fixing, open for the next 6 years or more. I guess that will make it so the actual problems get lost. So have you filled out the survey or attended any of the meetings to assist with giving your input. Just a reminder VDOT doesn't pull the information off of here. This will not be formal input for this project. If they don't get enough input this project could be canceled. Make sure that your formal input is given. If you are willing to post on here you should be willing to say what you have done. I have personally filled out the survey to give my input on this project. Please help to be part of the fix.
Six lanes is wide for this part of 64 but it can be done. It would clear up alot of traffic delays please start this project soon before we all get stuck in traffic.
I hope you keep updated on this project. They have started survey for this project, I get the 511 e-mail almost nightly. They are scheduled to start construction 2017 and finish about 2019. They are estimating this project currently at about 100 million. Please make sure that you stay informed and when they ask for public input make sure that you are willing to give it. As they do this the price may go up. Be willing to add your taxes to it. http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/hamptonroads/i-64_widening_project.asp
There was budget cuts and the workers have been cut back now three do the job of 73 now a few years ago. There will be landscaping to care for when road is wide.
Stay updated they just approved an additional $44 million for an extra two miles. This is averaging $20-22 million per mile. They are working on it stay informed.
On February 21, 2014, VDOT requested a Record of Decision (ROD) from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the first operationally independent section to be implemented from the Interstate 64 Peninsula Study Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). The proposed section extends from approximately Exit 247 to Exit 255 in the City of Newport News. To inform the public of this action, VDOT is making its request available for public review and comment. VDOT initially proposes to implement a partial build of the full-build improvement that is identified as the preferred alternative for this section in the EIS. The initial proposal includes one additional lane in each direction. The full-build improvement, which would eventually be implemented, would include two additional lanes in each direction associated with the preferred alternative for this section. VDOT and FHWA are specifically soliciting comments on this proposal. Comments should be submitted by April 2, 2014 to the VDOT Hampton Roads District Office of Communications, 1700 N. Main Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. Comments may also be submitted via email to hamptonroadspublicinfo@vdot.virginia.gov or by telephone at 757-925-2583.
I hope that everyone has submitted the comments that are needed to keep this project moving forward. And moderators please don't forget to submit these comments for your subscribers.
These delays cant be helped sometimes. It is just one of those things we have to live with in Hampton Roads. It is a small price to pay given all the other things this area has to offer. Larger oroads would benice, and some day will become a reality. For now, we should be greatful to the landscape workers who took thebrunt of the budget cuts, and provided the citizens with the funding to keep core services. I have attended budget meetings and i also voted. Thank you to all who supported this.
