Poorly marked lanes contribute to accidents, and affect the liability of all the parties, including the road owner, especially after the road owner has been notified of the defect.
"Me": your comments are rude and unhelpful.
This strip was paved in what, late August? It's time to paint the lines, Mayor of Kinston! It's now the middle of November! If you recall, the super Shamrock painted in front of City Hall in March was removed promptly, apparently because it was against The law. Isn't it equally against the law to have no lines painted on a major roadway? Step it up, Public Works!
Judging by the lack of comments from the DPW in the past few months, Leads one to believe that their initial interest in reading this site has faded. It may not be best to address the DPW in posts as if they are reading it, or request something from them. I would suggest contacting them directly. Has anyone done this?
Very good suggestion!
Yes, I have contacted them directly in other matters.
Very receptive, very helpful.
Working just now on the Riccardi road block stuff.
The machine that does the lines has been out for repairs. Look for new lines to be put down in the week. Let's try to be respectful of DPW. In my experience they have been extremely responsive and provide excellent service to this community.
@ Jen,
Thanks for the update. A majority of the comments are voicing concern over the lack of safety, and pointed towards the DPW.
This is true. But this is also what this site has been evolving into. A place where armchair commenters (Very much like myself) can voice frustration and begin to understand the reason they cant have their hometown repaired and corrected immediately. The insults are never acceptable, yet people are trained that the louder and harsher they complain, the more likely things are done.
That being said, my $.02 is The lack of even hand painted lines or "Dots" or even cones to align traffic while the city seeks to finish the job correctly, isnt that outlandish of a request. this intersection is (and has been for about 2 months) quite a liability at the moment.
Thanks though for being responsive.
@ Gerald
And once again, thanks Gerald for making the calls. It seems like you are the only ambassador between this website's commenters and actual people responsible for helping. Its good to see that the Fix part of this website is working more smoothly with you around. Keep it up big guy!
I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us--don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.
We all have this opportunity so serve, and just a call, just a note, that can do so much. When you put your name out there, you will see how powerful you are. When you do that much, our representative are dead certain you will take the trouble to vote.
A lot depends on our parents, as our children will depend on us: can we speak up for ourselves? Can we take action? Do we know how, can we learn, will we support each other.
It is a gift that keeps on giving.
We are all ambassadors. It only takes a phone call, looking up a phone number, taking some action and reporting it back here. And this is just one place: anyway you do it is fine. Here is also a nice place to put out the good news: we all need a little hope :-)
Again, there is NO way that the "people responsible for helping" will get into dialog on this site. They will get information, they may act on it, but this is not the place for them. Indeed, I would strongly warn them against doing so. Really.
The best way to do it is for us to write the stuff here, inform our fellow citizens, contact the agency or the alderman or the mayor, and kindly update us back here: you can be certain your work will be appreciated.

As to the line, the machine is broken. How long it takes to get it fixed, who's pushing for it to get done, who is tolerating poor vendor service to Kingston, yeah, that's a real issue. The measure of effectiveness getting the job done, not finding reasons why it isn't getting done, saying how hard it is: get it done.
Our job is to recognize when a job is well done: when things are working, yeah, there's a reason for that too: someone is doing a good job. That should count too.
OK. Back to work. Thanks, Seriously? Thanks Jen.
@ Alderman Jen Fuentes:
In response to your comment " Look for new lines to be put down in the week."
I was at the intersection on Friday, and there was no paint.
Have you been over there since last week had ended?
When I emailed Mike he said the striping machine had just been fixed, but needed to be tested. He thought it would be a week, otherwise they would hire an outside contractor which for financial reasons they were trying to avoid. If it is not done in a few days I'll check on the status of the machine. Also, I live in the area so I am aware of the delay.
@ Jen
Ive been thinking alot about this issue. I know the budget is a large issue, but an unfinished job should be temporarily safe until it can be resumed. Thats an imperative.
Shouldnt they at least put cones or some delineation in the area until the permanent lines are down? Regardless what stage of repair their machine may be in? I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I think the temporary measures, especially after this amount of time, should be there.
Thanks for helping out so far, I do appreciate it.
yesterday evening, a double yellow line was added, I am assuming the lines that differentiate the lanes are coming soon.
happy to see this getting done. we can almost close this one.
@ Jen,
They put the yello down, and it doesnt line up with the existing.
failed to put down anything else.
you asked for my patience, and you had it.
So instead of pushing, I waited.
so now I am pushing. This talk of wither getting it done, or paying someone outside the city to do it was just blowing smoke up your ... to get you off their back.
they are not held accountable to what they say.
make some noise, would yah?
twice i have had cars cut me off, because they were in the previous turn only lane and continued to go straight, the sign on the lights still say turn only. Lets hope they paint the rest of the lines before they paint the green stripe down Broadway.
Has gotten worse lately, and especially after snow storms when there is smashed snow covering the road, nobody seems to know which lane they are in or supposed to be in. I just automatically assume people will be switching lanes last second and cutting each other off every time...
I'll call on Monday. Nothing is going to get done with the snow. Honestly, the way that road goes from 2 lanes to 3 as you hit the corner of Broadway and Pine Grove has always been dangerous even with lines. The county traffic planner is supposed to get back to me with recommendations for that intersection.
@ Alderman Jen Fuentes
Your call to him and his response to you , and you relaying that to us is useless for many reasons.
1. YOU didnt relay it to us. Your follow through is terrible with getting the info back to us on this. I have to ask repeatedly for updates from you.
2. He will just tell you anything to get you off the phone.
3. He will lie to you, because YOU have no way to hold him accountable for what he screws up or lies about. ( telling you he would have it done OR someone else would paint it, and having neither happen is called lying still right?)
Sounds harsh huh? dont promise to help if all you are doing is relaying empty promises or failing to relay anything at all. thats not called helping. its called pretending. tell us "hey Im too busy to worry bout this" or maybe " you guys will have to work on this without me, i have too much on my plate and cant deal with this" or "I really dont care, stop bugging me". But stop pretending to help.
The Alderman's job is not a well paid one. You will get far more done with honey then vinigar. Let's keep this civil.
You are welcome to call DPW if you like.
Pictures of the problem is also helpful.
Lambasting people is not helpful. Alderman Fuentes stuck her neck out by responding and getting involved. Most of the other Alderman monitor this site as well but rarely get invovled because of the kind of attacks you just made. She is by far the most active. Let's not scare her off.
Anyway, nothing can be done on the painting till it warms up. Paint can't go down in cold weather - much less on the snow and salty conditions that will likely last for a couple more months.
Kudos Jen for being - and staying - involved with this site.
Let's all keep pressure to have this addressed promptly in the spring.
Thanks!
I haven't gotten scared off yet. The transportation council met this week and had committed to getting me some answers for this intersection. I have not responded because there is nothing yet to report. My understanding is that an actual report with potential fixes was made/ is in progress.
Wow. Yes, I'm with vad and Jen...
There's a lot to say about conveying the simple reality of what can and can't be done. Sometimes the answer is "no".
I greatly appreciate Ms. Fuentes work and attention.
The notion that if you push hard enough you can get someone to acede to your wishes on your schedule can only be entertained by people who haven't really tried to do that themselves.
In the real world, it takes work, and it takes working with people.

Jennifer and Hayes and Andi are the very best aldermen we have...
I'll be keeping an eye on this intersection. Let's hope the good weather in spring brings good news and something begins to happen. Please, keep us updated Jen.
The lack of turn lane markings is a huge danger at this intersection. The line painting machine MUST be fixed now; they were able to paint a green line the length of Broadway in March! Why can't they paint white lines for a few hundred feet in April? DPW has dragged their feet on this basic safety issue for far too long. Doesn't Vehicle and Traffic Code §1682 obligate them to maintain these markings? What's the city's legal exposure here, especially when there's that vivid green line saying IT CAN BE DONE, WE JUST CHOOSE NOT TO?
